Donor Support HelpedConstruct Afghan Girls' Sport Court

By Ginna Brelsford | Executive Director

Thanks to you, the Gohar Khaton Girls' School sport court is on its way to construction! Your contributions helped lay the foundation for a sport court and garden for a school for 3,000 girls, grades K through 12, in Afghanistan's third largest city. The gravel will be laid for the court beginning in February and exemplifies the importance of sports for girls in Afghanistan as well as the best in sustainable design and construction in Northern Afghanistan.

Today, the sports court at the Gohar Khaton Girls' School is a site of hopes and dreams for Afghanistan’s girl athletes.

"Our current school doesn't have a way for us to exercise and play our sports. I want to be on the volleyball team and compete with other teams. Without a sports court, we can't have a team. I am looking forward to the completion of the Gohar Khaton Girls' School so we too can play volleyball." Fahima, student

Participation in a sport is a critical part of any child’s physical and social development, especially for girls. Sport can help to improve their self-esteem and self-awareness,” says Dr. Atiqullah Amiri of UNICEF.

Sport teaches integrity and self-management by setting objective standards that girls can work to achieve.” Sports has been immensely therapeutic in helping Afghan children and youth to cope with issues they have faced and continue to face on a daily basis by providing an arena to temporarily escape the everyday hardships that accompany the realities of war.

The popularity of sports amongst Afghan children, especially girls, does not mask the realities and hardships they face on a daily basis. Rather, it is a signifier of the determination and passion within every Afghan child to build better futures for themselves, their families and their country.
