This Micro Project will help fund spay and neuter operations for dogs with owners who demonstrate financial need. Through your generosity,WAG can expand our reach to support community members who own dogs and would like to stop cycles of unwanted pups using qualified vets AND help reduce financial limitations for great potential local adopters in our selection process. This Giving Tuesday it's all about controlling the dog population, giving back and keeping animals healthy and safe.
Before we bring out the holiday balls, we have some other ahem * balls* to talk about. This one off campaign is all about spaying and neutering! We're fundraising dedicated money to fund sterilization operations when there is demonstrable need. This is essential to controlling the pet population and aligning ourseleves with best pratices. This money will help WAG dogs but also those in communities all over Kigali.
Under our current model, we sterilize all adult dogs in our care prior to adoption. With rescue dogs under 6 months, we have adopters commit (in writing) to organizing and financing this procedure with a qualified vet once their puppy reaches adolescence. The cost for these operations ranges from about 50$- 300$ (depending on vet, size and gender , as well as any follow up in case of complication). Under the current model are a few challenges:
* Male pups preferred because cost of neuter is less. * For many, the significant one-off expense of sterlization prevents excellent owners from adopting or financing future vet care. Sometimes, despite their commitment, adopters delay or don't follow through. * In addition to those adopting from WAG, we need dedicated funds to cover community dogs sterilizations. Our community engagement efforts have grown exponentially and so has openness to responsible pet ownership through spay /neuter.
