Our successful Siyafunda Afterschool Program is financially threatened at the moment and we really NEED your help, please! Our program is playing a big part in mitigating the impact Covid-19 has had on these children's education, and they will be devastated if we can no longer operate. 30 children in Grades 1 - 3 attend the program daily and 3 local women are being upskilled each year, as facilitators. , we NEED to keep our program running. 30 children are becoming literate and
Our project will help solve illiteracy and decrease school drop out rates in our rural area. The 30 children attending our program are in Grades 1 - 3 and they are still able to build strong literacy and numeracy foundations, to facilitate further educational success. Only 32% of children in our area complete high school. Our community does not have the option of quality education for their children, and our intervention was a request from the community.
The children develop their mother tongue, isiXhosa, using stories, having discussions and doing a creative activity connected to the story. The children develop their Maths and English skills using Tablets and the IXL online program, which is aligned to the Government Curriculum. Every Friday the children collect litter on the beach. They receive a cooked meal and fruit daily, as well as deworming twice a year. We are giving the children much-needed educational and nutritional support.
The children attending the program build educational foundations that are necessary for educational success! They will become fully literate in their mother tongue and reading for pleasure will be introduced to them - this is a gift for life! The program will strengthen these children's literacy and numeracy skills, giving them the necessary foundation and confidence needed for all further learning. The children also take home the skills they learn and share them with their family members.
