The Dell computers at the FAWE school have been operational since 2011. At that point they were purchased used. Over the past years, we have had to replace computer memory modules, motherboards, power supplies and monitors. It's now time to purchase a new set of energy-efficient computers. The new computers will be more reliable and loaded with current office productivity software. This new technology and programs will boost the learning of the girls.
The computers in the FAWE computer lab are over 7 years old and have been breaking down every other month or so. Sometimes the girls have to share computers because one or more computers are broken. The software is outdated. As a result we are not able to provide on-going relevant and reliable training.
This project will solve the problem of outdated technology / by purchasing and shipping 8 new energy-efficient computers - specially built for Africa and low energy consumption. Access to new computers (with current software) will enhance their learning. The new computers will also be more reliable - contributing to better access and less downtime - so that each girl will have more hands-on experience. The computers will help prepare them for success in today's computer-driven society.
Project contributes to achievement of UN goals, helping close the gender gap in education. It is an effective long-term investment, helping to eradicate poverty by enhancing education, broadening options and offering new opportunities. It offers great potential in terms of exposing the girls to much-needed computer technology and related opportunities. This exposure is helping to prepare the girls for our technology-aided world and for positions of future leadership.
