Provide Birth Certificates to 50 children

A microproject by Reach Out Cameroon (REO) Vetted since 2011 Top Ranked Effective Nonprofit Project of the Month Site Visit Verified

Summary

Today, many children are still not registered at birth in Cameroon. This will, later on, cause several problems for the child. It denies the child the right to a nationality. It blocks them from pursuing higher education and certain exams. It limits their mobility. For the state, they just don't exist. It also makes it difficult to produce national identity cards as adults, making them illegal citizens in their own country.

Challenge

Tole, the community targeted, has been often left out of administrative rule. Reach Out Cameroon has identified more than 100 vulnerable children in need of birth certificates. Some of the children drop out of school because without a birth certificate they cannot register nor write the first school leaving certificate examinations which is the first certificate that guarantees access to the secondary education system. This leads adolescents to drop out of school completely.

Solution

For just 16 dollars, you can pay the birth certificate for a child. We will compile an age declaration, legally identify the parents and legalize the documents. Establishing birth certificates for these children will enable them to stay in school and as such rise in the academic ladder making more of the children gain access to secondary education, higher education and as such an improvement in the economic conditions of the families and the communities as a whole.

Long-Term Impact

This project will guarantee a better future for over 50 vulnerable youth by providing them with this basic legal document (birth certificate), which is the document that grants them access to other opportunities and ensures their effective participation in all issues of national life for all their lives. In a highly militarized estate, not carrying an identification can grant preventive incarceration. You will be protecting these children as adolescents and adults.
