Preparing 30 Cambodian Youth for Job Placement

By Drew McDowell | Project Director

Empowering Youth in Cambodia (EYC) is delighted to report that our campaign to fund “Preparing 30 Cambodian Youth for Job Placement” was fully funded in January 2014!  This will provide real results in the lives of our students as they will be significantly better equipped to continue their education and get meaningful experience through work opportunities.

Many EYC students are barely able to get by, lacking adequate income for living and education expenses. This project will facilitate employment for Cambodian youth from poor backgrounds that will allow them the flexibility to continue their education.  Our teams are hard at work to provide marketable skills including English language skills (key for service industry jobs in Cambodia), computer skills training, and soft skills training designed to improve their communication and leadership skills as well as boost their confidence.  As trainees reach an acceptable level they will be coached for job interviews and provided with leads.

Our team can report many success stories to date of youth working in quality jobs and earning enough to pay for their university education. EYC’s students and alumni hold positions paying double salaries of garment workers (Cambodia’s largest industry) and often working around half the number of hours, enabling them to study in university.  Some of the EYC alumni who have now finished university are in demand in professional positions and have great career potential.  In January 2014 alone we placed six students into jobs and two in internships.

Over the coming year at least 30 of EYC's students will participate in this intensive job preparedness program which will result in their placement into quality employment.  The long term impact is a sustainable path out of poverty!
