Summary

South Sudan is one of the least developed countries in the world, with only 25% of the population able to read and write. Warrap State has a population of about one million people and is home to the only vocational training center. This project will train youth and women in various job skills, such as auto mechanics, dress-making, baking, driving, jewelry-making and more. Vocational skills will enable young people to become employed and earn income.

Challenge

Most of the population of South Sudan is uneducated and unskilled, therefore, the cycle of poverty is perpetuated. Young people are especially limited in their ability to earn income in such an underdeveloped country. In Lietnhom, those who are enrolled in school often attend classes outdoors, under a tree. World Concern operates the only vocational training center in Warrap State.

Solution

The vocational training center provides vital, useful job skills that are needed in this and surrounding communities. For example, the roads are littered with broken down motorcycles and vehicles because so few people are capable of fixing them. One skill students can learn is auto mechanics, making them in high demand for employment once they complete their training.

Long-Term Impact

With job skills, families' incomes will increase. Educating children will open up opportunities for a better, more productive future than their parents' generation. New businesses will be started, adding to the economic development of the region. Village banks and savings groups will help people save and be better prepared for potential crises, such as drought, in the future.
