Challenge

Banda district has been under recurrent drought and this has led to high seasonal migration of families under distress, mainly to brick kilns. About 30 children would be seasonally migrating from most of villages. If we take state-wide view, nearly two Lakh children would be migrating to Brick Kilns. Demonstration of successful management and usefulness of Seasonal Hostel to suggest education department for making a provision for this. More sustained effort is required in this regard.

Solution

In the last three years, about 60 children were provided the facility of Seasonal Hostel and Supplementary education. It resulted in their regularly attending schools and enhanced learning levels. If there is public provisioning of Seasonal Hostels, all such migrating children will get a second home to complete their Compulsory education. Parents will also not have to worry about the safety and wellbeing of their children.

Long-Term Impact

LOKMITRA will demonstrate the Utility of these Hostels through running them in few villages of Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, India. This will lead to public provisioning of Seasonal Hostels and with the additional support of charity organizations, it will be ensured that more than two Lakh children stop being child labor and realize their Right to Education.
