We did it!  Thanks to you and a private foundation sharing the cost, we met our international Rare Diseases Week fundraising goal needed to provide essential nutrition to children in the Philippines who are suffering from rare diseases. Poverty around the world prevents the treatment of many diseases. This is even more pronounced with rare genetic "orphan" disorders which can cost tens of thousands of dollars per medical treatment. More than 6,500 rare diseases affect humans, of which only a few hundred have any treatment.

This project will bring nutritional support for a six month period -- July through December 2016 -- to sustain the lives of 200 children who are undergoing treatment due to rare diseases. It will also call attention to the need for increased international medical research to find cures for such illnesses.

"The parents of our children believe in miracles, thanks to the support we receive from donors around the world," says Janet Francisco, a care coordinator at the philippine Society fort Orphan Disorders in Manila. "The parents of these chilren could never afford to pay for their treatment. The powdered milk and vitamins such as Pedia-Sure are the extra nutritional boost they need to overcome the stress and deterioration of their bodies and maintain their will to live."

All of the care providers and families of the children who are surviving against all odds, send their sincere gratitude to the GlobalGiving community. You have made a big difference in their lives.
