In honor of mothers around the world, this project will empower 700 women in the remote, underserved state of Jharkhand, India. Help us distribute seeds during the months of May - July so mothers in need can plant nourishing, sustainable kitchen gardens to reduce malnutrition and improve the quality of life of their families.
World Bank data shows that India has one of the highest percentages of children suffering from malnutrition. The remote Indian region of Jharkhand has one of the highest rates of malnutrition in the country. A lack of education, opportunity, and family-centered food sources prevent mothers from nourishing themselves and their families.
May-July, Karuna-Shechen will distribute non-GMO seeds to 700 mothers in need and teach them to plant organic kitchen gardens: a practical, sustainable solution that provides the means to grow nutrient-rich food to reduce malnutrition and improve quality of life. Donations of $10 provide non-GMO seeds; $25 buys ten fruit trees to add vitamin-rich produce; $50 funds a village demonstration on how to maximize farmlands; $75 supplies a rainwater harvesting system to sustain a kitchen garden!
The 700 women reached through this project will not only learn to tend and sustain their own gardens, but to collaborate and share their knowledge to increase long-term impact. Investing a few dollars in seeds will result in a huge harvest in food and opportunities. Together, we will empower mothers to grow food to reduce malnutrition and alleviate the suffering of hundreds of malnourished children.
