Juana Cun is busy preparing the interns for what is to come when their internship ends. She provided a workshop, where the young women organized a professional portfolio. They each arranged a packet that contained their resume, professional certificates, diploma, letters of recommendation, copies of identification, and background check documents. The young women also learned how to scan documents and send electronic resumes to employers. Many organizations request electronic documents these days. Juana reviewed each portfolio carefully to ensure the participants would be ready to apply for jobs when their internship ended.
The interns shared their experiences on the job.
Mayra feels blessed that every day she is learning more about being an accountant. In February she manually worked on the books of small businesses, created invoices, and assisted in making deposits and payments.
Leona enjoys her workplace environment and says that her peers treat her well. She has a lot of confidence because her duties require a lot of responsibility. She recently coordinated activities in the education centers in town. She worked with mothers in different communities to educate on the subject of sanitary hygiene in the home.
Delmy feels very happy because she receives a lot of support from her classmates - they are very positive. She feels important because the director notices her efforts when she organizes sports activities and cultural activities. She enjoys being a substitute teacher in social sciences, Kakchiquel and art. Another responsibility is writing student reports. Teaching is very fulfilling for her and she is happy that she is learning a lot.
Rosa is learning a lot of new things in her internship. Recently, she’s been focused on the control of vital signs of the patients at the health center. She’s also learning more about: temperature, arterial pressure, family vaccination plan, and delivery of medication in the pharmacy. Rosa has organized helpful charts and documents such as one for vaccination control and another for weight and height of children under 5.
Reyna feels really happy about coordinating activities in the community of Chumanzana. She enjoys working with the women and their gardens. She learns a lot with the participants, and they are very satisfied with the work that she does. She also is using her office skills in the Kateri Fund office where she is helping with purchases, delivery and revision of mail, and bank deposits.
All of the young women are doing well in the program and Juana reports that their work supervisors are pleased with their work. They will finish the program with work experience and good references to put on their resumes. Then the challenge will be to use their skills to find a permanent job!
These young women will be finishing their internships in June. In order to provide this program for another group of young women we will need approximatly $5000. You can start the ball rolling by making a donation today.
