During our disaster recovery work in Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, we were able to develop local experts, able to deliver water, sanitation and food security initiatives in an excellent manner not only technically but community mobilization and training activities. We will send 4 of them in an intermittent basis to train local Nepali organizations and leaders so that the locals learn and can sustain and expand their initiatives.
During Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, we were able to develop and perfect an approach to solve the problem of water, sanitation and food security by a ground-breaking multi-faceted solution of low-cost, robust toilets, giant rainwater harvesters, communal hand-wash and vegetable gardens for food security. We train locals to be experts and together with our own specialists, we will be providing our services in Nepal.
The problem in Nepal is the lack of on the ground expert as international NGO's bring their approaches and technologies which most often do not fit local conditions. We will bring our own volunteers who primarily will work on our projects and provide technical support to other organizations.
The implementation of water and sanitation to thousands of earthquake survivors in Nepal would mean that the spread of diseases as a result of open defecation will be prevented. This will mean quick recovery as healthy people are able to contribute to long-term recovery effort.
