It is an ongoing challenge for girls in Sierra Leone to stay in school due to the costs of uniforms, school supplies, books and school-related charges. Many families are unable to cover these costs. Families with limited funds often focus first on sending their boys to school. As a result, hundreds of girls tragically drop out of school. This project will help to change this by removing limiting barriers through scholarships for 10 girls. Funds will cover their school-related expenses.
According to UNICEF, girls continue to suffer severe disadvantage and exclusion in education systems throughout their lives. An estimated 31 million girls of primary school age and 32 million girls of lower secondary school age were out of school in 2013. Gender disparities increased in secondary and tertiary education. The majority of these girls live in sub-Saharan Africa. Providing scholarships will help ensure that they stay in school and advance their education.
Funds from this project will cover school-related expenses for 10 girls that are full of potential. This includes uniforms, school supplies, books, school fees / charges etc - to ensure that that the girls continue their schooling. Your support will remove the primary obstacles that determine whether or not 10 girls continue their education in the coming academic year.
By providing the needed support to continue and complete their education, girls will be able to break out of the vicious cycle that entraps unskilled and resource-poor girls. At-risk girls will become emancipated women when given the chance to be well-educated, and develop into useful citizens who are gainfully employed and self-sufficient.
