In Cambodia blind children from rural areas have no access to education or rehabilitative training. This means that too many are destined for a life of absolute poverty and in some cases slavery or death. Our school is currently the only centre in Southwestern Cambodia to provide scholastic education through Braille, vocational training through traditional music, as well as computer training. We need urgent support for our Braille teacher to bring a real education/ future to our blind children.
The Cambodian government is supposed to provide support for Braille assistance at state school level for the blind, but this doesn't happen. This means in order to teach our 7 blind and partially sighted children, we must sponsor the Braille teacher ourselves. Sponsoring our braille teacher will allow us to help our blind children to have access to vital scholastic education.
This project will sponsor a specialist Braille teacher for 1 academic year. The teacher will teach our blind students all subjects in the national curriculum, accompanying them in their state school lessons. She will prepare them for their end of year national curriculum exams.
Our students can grow up with a high-level of education and even go to university. This enables them to choose their career and to be able to have the freedom to make positive life-choices, whether as a civil servant or a professional musician etc;. Education gives them the instruments to be strong, empowered, free and independent young adults. Blind people are shunned by society and often treated badly in rural areas. Being empowered makes them a positive society-changing role-model!
