This project will provide tuition, uniforms, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies for nine orphans to attend sixth grade at the Buhumba village school on Idjwi Island in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Idjwi Island, located in Lake Kivu on the eastern border of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has seen a dramatic increase in its population in recent years, much of which is the result of refugees fleeing violence in the DRC and Rwanda to its east. A substantial number of these new residents are children, including many orphans. Many of these children are unable to pay for supplies and the modest tuition to attend school, and are forced to withdraw from the village school.
This project will provide tuition, a uniform, and supplies for nine sixth graders to continue with their education at the Buhumba village school. Without this support, many of these students will be forced to withdraw from the school, or the teachers' salaries may be reduced, thereby impacting the ability to maintain the teachers at the school.
Providing the basic supplies and tuition for sixth grade will allow these students to continue with their education and allow them to prepare for additional studies and professional training at the secondary school on Idjwi Island.
