Lordina is 8 years old and a sweet and kind girl. Going to school is a life-changing event in her life. Lordina's mother only has a small monthly income to support the whole family, which does not allow Lordina to stay in school. She has been missing classes several times and her mother is struggling to provide for the family. Lordina's need for the year 2017 is $ 1490 and so far, $ 443 has been raised. There is a need of $1047 to enable her remain in school for 2017.
In the rural town of Gbawe, Ghana, there is only one free public school and it is extremely over-crowded with up to 65 students per class. High illiteracy and unemployment prevent many families from being able to afford other schools that charge fees and many children dropout to work. The literacy rate in Ghana is just 71.5% and huge gaps remain between literate men and women. Extreme poverty, illiteracy, and a lack of proper education trap many families in a cycle of deprivation.
