Federico M. Charle is an author born and raised in Batey Libertad. He was the second graduate from Yspaniola's University Scholarship Program. Fede recently published a children's book titled: "Gato, La Pesadilla de Las Brujas", based on his experiences growing up in Batey Libertad. Our goal is to gift every school-aged child in Batey Libertad a copy of "Gato". We want to give our students a physical reminder that they too can reach their goals and achieve their dreams!
Most children in the Batey do not have access to their own personal books at home. If they want to read, they have to try and borrow books from school. Federico experienced this as a child and always enjoyed reading books his teachers let him borrow. After publishing his children's book, he told us of the impact reading had on him during his youth and wanted to pass on the same joy to the children of the batey by giving them all the opportunity to own their very own book.
Providing each child with a copy of Federico's book will remind the children of Batey Libertad that they too can do whatever they set their mind to. Seeing someone from their own hometown leave and become a published author is inspiring. This project will provide children with a physical book. Most children in the Batey don't have books of their own, and owning a book will allow them to practice their reading on their own time at their own pace, and encourage their love for literature.
The Learning Center offers a vertical model of educational attainment that will grow as students graduate from our program to become the teachers and mentors for a new generation of children. With this project's support, we aim to incorporate preschool classes and teen mentorship to feed into our existing university scholarship program, thereby offering higher education to the most vulnerable youth in the Dominican Republic. Through education, families may finally break the cycle of poverty.
