Summary

This project will bring healing and reconciliation to communities on Mt Elgon. Over the last few months more than 30 people have been killed and 42 women raped by a gang of 17. Our Healing and Rebuilding Our Communities program will give 3 day workshops first for the rape victims and then their male fathers, husbands, and brothers. Community dialogues will be held into to determine methods of bringing reconciliation and peace to the communities involved.

Challenge

In the last few months a gang of approximately seventeen members has killed over 30 members of the community and raped 42 women. Moreover over 600 families have fled their homes and gardens as they are afraid to sleep there at night which is when the gang attacks. These gang members were part of the Sabaot Land Defense Force that killed about 600 members of the community in 2006 to 2008 with another 100,000 people fleeing the mountain.

Solution

The Mt Elgon community is upset with the killings and rapes by the gang members. Over 600 families have fled their homes, mostly to local schools where they have become internally displaced people. Our project will promote community healing, reconciliation, and dialogues on how to make the community safe. These dialogues will include government officials and police.

Long-Term Impact

A violent conflict in a community affects at least 1000 people who are the recipients of the peacebuilding activities. Frequently the conflicts have deeper roots and by bringing past injustices and conflicts to the surface peaceful coexistence in enhanced. Strategies to confront subsequent violence in the community leads to peaceful resolutions of conflicts without retaliation and escalation. TCSC remains involved in the communities for years in order to build up firm foundations for peace.
