Approximately 275,000 Kenyan children are categorized as street children and forced to fulfill their basic needs on the streets. Without some form of basic education and economic training many children turn to theft and prostitution to survive. Jitegemee has helped street children who have shown a dedication to changing their lives and learning the skills to be self-sufficient in adulthood. Jitegemee provides critical support and resources to keep kids in school and/or learn a vocational skill.
Without some form of basic education, many street children have no hope for their future and end up dying on the pavement, victims of drugs, violent crime and disease. Jitegemee reaches out to young street children and helps them return to school, giving them their childhoods-and futures-back. We are committed to helping street children overcome all the obstacles that interfere with their success in school-hunger, embarrassment about inadequate clothing and shoes, a lack of money for books, etc.
This project will help provide food, books, clothes, computers, staff time, and other items critical to the success of Jitegemee. Every year we rely on the support of donors from across the globe to provide the items that are critical for our students to attend school, and for us to provide the additional support and services needed for them to be successful!
Jitegemee students not only go on to sustain themselves, but frequently they go on to be the primary providers for their families, helping to keep their brothers and sisters from following the path that initially led them to the streets. Their success ultimately becomes the success of the community, creating thriving and contributing citizens working to make Machakos and Kenya stronger.
