Give Back Education to Tsum Valley's Young Nuns

A microproject by International Disaster Volunteers (IDV)
Give Back Education to Tsum Valley's Young Nuns

Summary

During the devastating Nepal earthquake in April 2015, the Buddhist Nunneries in Tsum Valley, were all severely damaged. For the young nuns, aged 8 - 14, the nunnery is not just their home, it's also their school. The earthquake not only left the young nuns without shelter but also unable to continue their education. The young nuns are dedicated to their studies, religious and academic, and with your support, we can rebuild the nunnery's classroom and give these little nuns back their future.

Challenge

The young nuns are continuing classes within tents and under tarpaulins, but these won't last long, particularly at such a high altitude and with the harsh weather conditions. Undertaking a construction project in Tsum Valley is fraught with difficulties, due to the topography and remote location; currently the area is only accessible by helicopter. Owing to these challenges, reconstruction needs to start urgently, if there is any chance of giving the young nuns safe, permanent classrooms.

Solution

This project will support the reconstruction of the nunnery; specifically funds will be used to help rebuild the nunnery's classroom. The existing nunnery was in danger of collapsing due to land drop during the earthquake. Added to the risk of landslides from the cliff above, it is imperative that the nunnery is moved to a safe site. While this relocation will be challenging it will provide the opportunity to rebuild in a way that improves the teaching facilities.

Long-Term Impact

The Tsum Valley nunnery will be designed and constructed for the long-term so it will not only provide high quality education space for the current young nuns, it will be used to educate young nuns for generations to come. While complete reconstruction will take time, just starting the process will give the young nuns hope and remind them that despite being in such a remote place, that they have not been forgotten during this trying time. A really big thank you for your kindness and humanity!
