In September 2013, Daniel Kuhani, was rescued and brought to New Life Home. After careful testing, it was determined that Daniel was in need of a Cochlear Implant. An otolaryngologist in Indianapolis made arrangements for him to receive the implant without cost from the surgical services of his staff or hospital and Baby Daniel will receive ongoing therapy when he returns to Nairobi. However, he still needs the cost of the implant covered: $2000 covers batteries and a back up transmitter.
When Baby Daniel arrived at a New Life home he was ushered into loving arms and clerked by our nurses and doctor. Shortly thereafter, our staff noticed that while he missing some of his developmental milestones, and testing confirmed that Baby Daniel was deaf. Because surgery for Cochlear Implants is not offered in Kenya, many people have already come together to make hearing a reality for Baby Daniel.
Doctors have volunteered their services to cover the costs of surgery, flights have been paid for through the fundraising efforts of an elementary school student, a Congresswoman worked on behalf of getting Daniel and his caregiver, Miss Yvonne, visas to come over for the surgery; all that remains are the materials costs - the implants, batteries and a backup transmitter, and ongoing therapy costs upon return to Nairobi. This mircoproject is seeking to fund the batteries and backup transmitter.
The young people who started this dream didn't have any idea how much it would cost and how many ways it could have failed; however, at this point nearly two-thirds of the costs have been covered! So many people have already come together to make a lifetime of hearing possible for this young orphan from Nairobi. Won't you join us in giving Daniel the gift of hearing?
