Each year, over 100 teenage girls give birth in Mpigi District. For many, it's a time of tension as some don't have any one to talk to. We don't condone the practice, but we work with communities to support these girls to improve early pregnancy outcomes, child health development & economic self-sufficiency. This project provides birth kits, psycho social support & basic necessities to support the abandoned vulnerable girls through the process of pregnancy birth &child development
Over 20,000 teenage mothers country-wide and 500 in Mpigi District need assistance of various categories as they cannot cope up with circumstances and responsibilities of raising their children.Majority of pregnant mothers do not have separate counseling centers in government health centers.The country has a limited number an institutions that take care of teenage mothers and their children so that they can grow into responsible citizens
The project has set up a separate counseling room in the health center, separate from that of adults, a separate medical psychologist and counselor will be deployed to talk to young pregnant mothers to prepare them for an appropriate safe delivery, the project will also buy birth kits for the girls since most of these girls have been sent out of home and stigmatized as a punishment for the actions they did so no one cares about them.
The project has worked with stakeholders, partners ,well wishers, donors and the government of Uganda to improve the quality of life for stigmatized and marginalized teenage mothers, their children, families and communities through capacity building, counseling, nutritional support ,non-formal training, legal representation and human rights upholding.
