Empower 30 Rape Survivors Through Soap Sales

A microproject by The Advocacy Project
Empower 30 Rape Survivors Through Soap Sales

Summary

The project supports The Moussou Kalanso group, a local Malian Women's Association that helps rape survivors learn skills needed to start their own small businesses. The project will focus on the soap making trade to help participants increase productivity by creating a sheltered area for making soap when it is raining, create access to a second cutting table, and obtain more ingredients. The women learning soap making at the center will gain skills needed to generate income for their families

Challenge

Sini Sanuman, a Malian advocacy group for women's rights in Bamako, offers rape survivors in Mali a chance to recover their confidence in the company of other women while learning a skill that will generate income, such as soap making. However, the support ends when the rape survivors leave the center. None of the participants have been able to continue to make soap because of the cost of equipment and ingredients.

Solution

The funds raised through GlobalGiving will go to the Women's Association. The Women's Association will be able to buy a shed which will allow the women to continue to work when it is raining and buy more materials and ingredients. This will provide the rape survivors with the opportunity to continue to make soap which will allow them to make a living and continue on the path of recovery, reintegration, and more importantly, continue to contribute to peace in Mali.

Long-Term Impact

This project will have the following impacts. First, 30 rape survivors will continue to make soap, thus allowing them to continue on the path of recovery, regain their confidence, and earn an income. Second, the project will help the Women's Association increase their production capacity . Third, this project will help increase the number of beneficiaries, which will empower more women to continue on the trajectory of promoting peace in Mali.
