In South Africa, the response to the Covid-19 pandemic has been a lockdown including school closures. People employed in the informal or semi-formal economy, such as teachers working in ECD schools in underprivileged areas, have lost their income, while also falling through the cracks of the government response to the situation. Donations to this project will be earmarked to pay subsidies to the teachers in the schools with whom we work, to help them in this difficult time.
Under the current severe lockdown in South Africa, schools are unable to operate in the traditional way. Online schooling is not a realistic option in impoverished townships. At the same time, many people are unable to work and therefore cannot afford school fees, even if their children were able to attend schools. The ultimate result is that school teachers have lost all income. Government programmes to address loss of income are not extending to these teachers.
Funds raised will be 100% applied to provide subsidies to teachers to see them through this difficult time.
Providing an income to teachers while they cannot earn their wages will allow them to survive through this pandemic, and return to work in due course.
