This project will start a monthly parliament for children from our remedial schools which encourages them to engage in local, national and international democratic processes. These children will be discussing issues that directly affect their lives and therefore will promote leadership skills and confidence through engaging with real-world issues at a young age. This, we hope, will establish a good foundation to becoming engaged and active adults who can help alleviate the problems of poverty.
Many children in Tamil Nadu are living in poverty and struggle to get access to education. When children do get access to schooling there is often a gap between the expected proficiency of a child and the actual learning level. There is a need for platforms where children can explore and understand issues which directly affect them and can engage in discussions that empower them as citizens.
The children's parliaments, which stem from our free remedial night schools, will be providing a platform in which children can express themselves freely in a supported environment, exploring their own unique views and opinions and developing as young adults. The parliament will engage children with local, national and international democratic, social and political issues and therefore will provide them with knowledge crucial to their later studies and broader lives.
The main goal is to empower and energize the children to pursue their dreams. The remedial schools and children's parliament will build the children's confidence, allowing them to participate in important conversations, locally and nationally. We hope that awareness about oneself and society will help these children to develop a strong personal identity paired with good coping and life skills that they will take into their adult lives.
Every microproject is intended to use the donations it receives in accordance with its stated description; however, it is important to provide project leaders with the flexibility to maximize the potential benefit from the donations they receive. This means that your donation may be used as a part of the main project that supports this microproject, specifically Help start 5 new evening schools for 200 children. In this event, the project leader is required to post an update to the microproject detailing the results and reasons behind this change.
