Funds raised will go to repair the damage to student housing. The home in El Espinal, Oaxaca has extensive damage to walls and currently too damaged to house students. At our property in Juchitan neighbor's wall collapsed decreasing the safety of our students. The neighbor has not repaired his wall and we need to build one property to keep the students safe. Through these repairs, we can increase the students served in the project.
On September 7, 2017, our region was hit by an 8.2 earthquake. The program centers that house our students were damaged. One home is damaged to the extent that it can not currently be used, the second home has damage to its property walls, decreasing the safety of our female students. Due to the damage, we have reduced the number of students we can accept into our Education program.
This project will repair the damage to the two homes, using local labor, providing jobs for local workers and increasing our capacity to house young women who need to leave their villages to continue their education.
We see the young indigenous women of Mexico not only being able to break out of their own economic poverty but as future leaders capable of moving their communities toward sustainable development. Our goal is to help this young women to become change agents for their communities, impacting not only their own families but other is there communities as well, and they take the knowledge they have gained in the program back home.
