Guddi enjoys being the Girls' Council Leader
Guddi enjoys being the Girls' Council Leader

Guddi lives in a small village of the Bundi district in the state of Rajasthan, India. She is 14 years old. She is currently enrolled in the 8th grade at the upper primary school in her village. Guddi’s elder sister, Kavita is a Team Balika (community volunteer) with Educate Girls.

The sisters got introduced to Educate Girls and its activities through an Educate Girls’ Field Coordinator, Kalu, who conducts various activities in their school. As part of these activities, a Bal Sabha or Girls’ Council has been formed in her school. Last year Guddi was elected to the post of ‘Bal Panch’ (Head of Girls' Council) through a democratic election process. Guddi enjoys this position of leadership, and has undertaken her responsibilities with great enthusiasm and enjoys working as Bal Panch.

All 13 members of the Bal Sabha are assigned different sets of responsibilities and are expected to perform five life skills games. The learning from these games also help them resolve issues arising at school. As the Bal Panch, Guddi participates in all activities of the school and plays an active role in organizing them. “Prior to this everything was done by our teacher but now, the members of our Bal Sabha are doing the work together and responsibly”, says Guddi. The games help these girls develop communication skills and enhance their problem-solving and decision-making skills, while also teaching them the qualities of empathy and courage.

This quality of being enterprising has also translated into her personal life. Last year when Guddi’s father decided to marry her and her sister off, both of them put up a strong resistance and stalled the wedding. “Now I will marry of my own will and only after I grow up. I will never forget the post of Bal Panch.  All this could be possible due to the efforts of Educate Girls. I am thankful to the Educate Girls and hope that in future too the institution will continue to help the girls make their life successful”, says a vibrant Guddi.
