Summary

Hunger is something too many children in Kenya know about. As part of our care for AIDS orphans, we like to provide self-sustainable sources of food for the children. With a borehole (very deep well), a farm belonging to our program in Lunga Lunga, Kenya will be able to provide food for the children in our programs, as well as enough to sell to provide funds for the clinic to continue their good work with these children.

Challenge

HIV+ chldren must eat good, nutritious food in order to gain weight and to take their medications. Kenya has been suffering from a drought for many years now and children and adults are unable to eat what they need because food is difficult to grow without water.

Solution

A borehole will bring water to our farm, allowing food to grow in an arid area. The borehole, together with the use of conservation farming, will allow the gardeners to plant and harvest nutritious veggies, maize, moringa, potatoes, and other food for our partner clinic to distribute to the neediest of children and families. Greenhouses will be placed on this land, as well, for the growth of tomatoes which will be sold to hotels for income for the clinic. Without water, all this won't happen

Long-Term Impact

HIV+ children and their guardians will receive huge benefits from this project including: much needed nutritious food to keep them healthy, training in how to prepare nutritious meals, the ability to obtain seeds for an established seed bank, funds from food sold, savings from food consumed from the garden, and the knowledge that they can take care of themselves, even during a drought.
