A Broken Heart

By Tanya Weaver | Executive Director

My heart is broken in a million tiny, shattered pieces.  I feel such grief that it is hard to write this report.  I've never had to write a report such as this one and it pains me to do so.

Our beautiful Beverlyne is gone.

Thanks to your generosity, we purchased a new leg for our girl and she was thrilled.  She knew that this was going to be a new life for her, allowing her to walk without the assitance of crutches and giving her the chance to return to her job.  She'd be able to manage the rough terrain between the main road and her small home.  Trust me, that trail was a rough one, especially during a rain storm, when the red clay turned into mud and all of us had the most difficult time walking - our shoes sucked into the mud.

We selected a leg made in Germany because of the quality of life Beverlyne could get out of it.  Durable, flexible, excellent.  We sent our girl to another city in Kenya to get fitted because there is a better hospital, one who specializes in prosthetics, and she'd get good care.  Beverlyne was in good spirits are she flew away and was received well by the hospital staff. We talked to her the night she arrived and she was happy and excited to get her new leg fitted and to receiving physical therapy and training on how to use it.  She went to sleep.

Then, we received the call.

Beverlyne died.

I am still in shock, as is all the staff in the Mombasa program, where Beverlyne was part of the family of HIV+ children we've cared for during the last 10 years.  We just buried her this past Saturday and can't get over that this young woman who has been through so much is gone. We are told that she died due to dehydration.

Our bright star is no longer, but without a doubt, you gave her hope.  You believed that this girl could move on, literally and figuratively, and you helped provide her with such happiness through the provision of her new leg. Thank you for caring for children like Beverlyne.  I can't thank you enough.
