Sewing Machines Purchased

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Officer

Dear Friends,

We are now able to report that AIL has accumulated sufficient funds to buy sewing machines in quantity.  Thanks to your generous support, staff are replacing worn out old machines and at some centers adding more machines to increase capacity. Four centers will benefit from the latest purchases. Staff will continue to respond to the need for machines as they arise and change allocations if needed.

The plan being implemented is for one Learning Center to receive 10 machines to replace its worn out stock and for another 30 new machines to go to two centers as replacements and to increase capacity.  So far 2 machines have gone to one center and 13 to one of AIL’s largest centers (12 regular sewing machines and 1 zigzag machine).  The zigzag machine will be used to teach another method of stitching which is used to prevent fraying and for reinforcement, as well as for decorative purposes.

Learning to sew can be life changing for students. One of students from literacy and sewing class said:   ”My name is Aziza . I have a lot of problems in my life as my parents are dead and I was illiterate. I never thought that I could not be educated but from the day that I joined this learning center I started learning. Now I can read and write and I am also sewing clothes and I can earn money doing that. So I thank the AIL organization for providing us these opportunities.”

Thank you for your interest and support.
