{"id":54792,"date":"2020-07-03T08:38:38","date_gmt":"2020-07-03T13:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/?p=54792"},"modified":"2022-12-15T10:18:05","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T15:18:05","slug":"racial-injustice-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/racial-injustice-statement\/","title":{"rendered":"We Have Work To Do."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The police killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many other Black Americans in the last few months\u2014indeed, over hundreds of years\u2014have spurred long-overdue calls for systemic change in the United States and around the world. These conversations extend beyond the police, and have spurred organizations of all types to start or re-commit to a process of introspection focused on identifying ways to eliminate racial oppression.<\/p>\n<p>Since our CEO Alix Guerrier shared his letter, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/dismantling-racism-requires-participation-from-all\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dismantling Structural Racism Requires Participation From All<\/a>,\u201d GlobalGiving has taken time to deliberately consider our place in the movement for racial justice. In a series of facilitated staff discussions, a strong theme emerged: GlobalGiving\u2019s commitment to racial justice must start within.<\/p>\n<p>We have a lot to learn and a lot of work to do, and are committed to listening to our community\u2014in particular Black leaders among our partner organizations\u2014to guide our actions. Today, we\u2019re sharing a start\u2014the next steps we are beginning to work on immediately to make GlobalGiving a stronger ally in the movement for racial justice.<\/p>\n<p>We will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<p><strong>1. Conduct an implicit bias audit of our programming<\/strong> including, but not limited to: our nonprofit recruiting, application, and onboarding process; training and learning opportunities; customer service; and the distribution of GlobalGiving funding and opportunities. It is our responsibility to root out racism wherever it lives in our day-to-day organizational practices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Prioritize the visibility of our partners engaged in racial justice work in the United States and internationally.<\/strong> Our CEO started by recommending a few excellent organizations to support in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/dismantling-racism-requires-participation-from-all\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his June 1 letter<\/a>. We\u2019re now exploring ways to bring attention to all of the organizations in our community engaged in this urgent work on an ongoing basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Identify, name, and address the ways in which philanthropy broadly (including ourselves) play a role in structural racism.<\/strong> From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgespan.org\/insights\/library\/leadership-development\/executive-summary-bmp-race-to-lead-report\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of diversity in philanthropic leadership roles<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssir.org\/articles\/entry\/overcoming_the_racial_bias_in_philanthropic_funding\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gross funding disparities<\/a> for organizations led by people of color, the need to radically reimagine philanthropy is clear. To end harmful practices in the sector, we commit to exposing them and elevating alternatives. Just as our partner Deanna James in St. Croix has bravely done in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/philanthropy-and-race-in-virgin-islands\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her powerful letter<\/a>; we look forward to sharing more points of view in our Learn Library.\n<\/ul>\n<p>Our commitments are not enough to undo systems created and reinforced over hundreds of years to oppress Black people in the United States. It will take all of us, working hard every day, to create a future free from racial injustice. We are committed to listening to feedback, learning, and trying to do better\u2014and sharing our journey with you.<\/p>\n<p>As we make progress on these first steps and identify other ways to right injustices, we will be held accountable by our mission and our community. Michael earned bachelor's degrees in international studies and Spanish studies from American University and his master's degree in Latin American studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
