Gift 1: A precious memory<\/h3>\n

My first gift is a memory of your own, one that reminds you of the privilege of being here on planet Earth.<\/p>\n

Take a moment to return to it. When was the last time you felt amazed by our shared home? Close your eyes and picture it. What happened? Was anyone else with you? How did you feel? What made that moment possible?<\/p>\n

Ready? 3, 2, 1\u2026<\/p>\n

How did it go? Maybe a moment surfaced. I wish I could hear all about it! Until then, I’d love to share mine with you. <\/p>\n

My story involves my grandmother, a hummingbird, and a muicle. <\/p>\n

One summer, my grandparents were renovating their home, and my grandmother planted a muicle, a shrub with bright, tubular orange flowers, by a window. She told me it could attract hummingbirds. I had never seen one up close, so I spent days waiting, staring through the glass. <\/p>\n

Summer passed without a single visit, but she kept caring for the plant, reminding me to be patient.<\/p>\n

Months later, while I was doing homework, she called me to the window. And there it was: a hummingbird, like a metallic green brushstroke suspended in the air, hovering before an orange flower. It stayed only a few seconds, but I remember feeling immense joy.<\/p>\n

What was your memory? Whatever it was, it is a testament to the privilege of inhabiting this planet. But that privilege is not guaranteed. In fact, it is increasingly under threat. That is why Earth Day is not only a celebration of our shared home, but also a call to action to heal it.<\/p>\n

Gift 2: A source of hope<\/h3>\n

The future of our planet feels uncertain. The big reports<\/a> show that the world remains far off track from achieving the 2030 Agenda, a set of 17 goals adopted by member states to advance sustainable development. In this context, it is not uncommon to experience anxiety or even hopelessness. So where can we find hope?<\/p>\n

I carried that question with me to COP30 in November 2025, held in Bel\u00e9m, Brazil, where I represented GlobalGiving. <\/p>\n

This year, some major governments participated only minimally, and conversations shifted from mitigation to adaptation. The message was clear: the crisis has reached a point where reducing emissions is not enough. We must also adapt to the realities already unfolding, from extreme weather to displacement and new health risks.<\/p>\n

And yet, there was hope.<\/p>\n

While some governments stepped back, civil society stepped forward. I saw this from my very first moments at COP, where a group of young activists held placards at the entrance of the venue that read: \u201cWe are still here! We have inherited a crisis, and we are determined to solve it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That same spirit carried into parallel spaces across Bel\u00e9m, such as the Global South House, where philanthropic and civil society leaders gathered to share lessons and reimagine solutions. <\/p>\n

There, I joined a group of organizations connected through GlobalGiving, including Elas+<\/a>, Fondo Tierra Viva<\/a>, Friendship<\/a>, and Sahkal<\/a> to discuss the kind of philanthropy needed to properly support community-led responses to socio-environmental challenges.<\/p>\n

During our time together, I learned that Sahkal is implementing a reforestation project in southwestern Chad to support biodiversity, ensure access to natural resources, and create opportunities for younger generations. I learned that Elas+ is channeling resources to cis and trans women across Brazil to strengthen their leadership and environmental initiatives. <\/p>\n

I learned that Friendship\u2019s mangrove afforestation program in Bangladesh is restoring ecosystems, strengthening coastal defenses, and capturing significant amounts of carbon dioxide, all through strong community ownership. And I learned that Fondo Tierra Viva is supporting community-led agroecology initiatives in Central America, improving access to healthy food while protecting biodiversity, water, and soils, and creating opportunities for youth.<\/p>\n

By the end of my time in Bel\u00e9m, one thing had become clear: the seeds of a better future are already being planted by communities around the world.<\/p>\n

And that is my second gift to you: a reminder that communities across our planet are working to heal our shared home and ensure the well-being of the community of life. Even in moments of profound uncertainty, there is still reason to hope.<\/p>\n

Gift 3: An opportunity to act<\/h3>\n

Even though communities around the world are already leading the solutions we need, their efforts often fall short due to limited access to funding and resources. As we discussed during our panel at the Global South House, barriers such as short-term funding, restrictive requirements, and predefined agendas that fail to recognize community expertise are undermining our collective response to the environmental crisis.<\/p>\n

It is easy to feel paralyzed by the scale of this challenge. But it is important to remember that all life on this planet is interconnected, and that is our greatest strength. Together, we have the knowledge, resources, and relationships needed to heal our planet. The challenge is to bring them together in ways that prioritize the common good, are grounded in lived experience, and respect communities\u2019 right to shape their own futures.<\/p>\n

With that spirit in mind, we at GlobalGiving created the Climate Action Fund<\/a>, a mechanism that pools contributions from donors like you and directs them to high-impact, grassroots environmental solutions.<\/p>\n

So here is my third and final gift to you: an opportunity to act.<\/p>\n

In Mexican folklore, hummingbirds are sometimes seen as messengers between the living and their ancestors. Perhaps, by caring for that muicle, my grandmother was not only supporting a hummingbird and its role in pollination, but also, in her own way, building a bridge between generations. I feel I received a powerful message that day, one that still lives within me, connecting me to the wonder of our planet and to my grandmother.<\/p>\n

Now, it is time to ask: what bridges are we building to connect our present and our future, and to ensure the continuity of our shared home? I believe the Climate Action Fund is one of those bridges, bringing together resources, knowledge, and people in service of our planet.<\/p>\n
