<\/p>\n

We\u2019re celebrating Give to Women and Girls Day early this year. From October 6 to the official day on October 11, GlobalGiving is celebrating Give to Women and Girls Day, where we take a moment to recognize that the success of our world depends on the success of women and girls.<\/p>\n

From Sudan to Mexico, from Hong Kong to Afghanistan, women and girls are powering change that makes societies stronger, safer, and more sustainable. They are leading climate adaptation, building peace, protecting reproductive rights, and creating sanctuaries of care and community in times of crisis.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s campaign is more than a fundraiser. It\u2019s a celebration of women and girls as powerful agents of change in the face of overlapping crises.<\/p>\n

Two Things Are Happening at Once<\/h3>\n

Across the globe, we see a stark reality:<\/p>\n

  • Hardship is growing more dire. In 2024, one in four countries<\/a> experienced measurable backlash against gender equality, from restrictions on girls\u2019 education to shrinking reproductive rights.\n
  • At the same time, sanctuaries of care and resilience are growing. In every region, women and girls are leading solutions\u2014building safety nets, spearheading climate innovations, and keeping peace processes alive.\n

    <\/p>\n

    Nonprofits like Fondo Semillas<\/a> in Mexico remind us of this dual reality. On one hand, they are witnessing rising violence, shrinking access to resources, and systemic barriers that threaten the lives of millions of women and girls currently making the dangerous trek<\/a> through Mexico looking for safety and opportunity. <\/p>\n

    Yet, this network of grassroots organizations does not sit back and watch passively. They press on with their services, and have actually maintained and expanded their work in humanitarian aid, legal assistance, healthcare, and psychosocial support in spite of mounting challenges.<\/p>\n

    Together, they build small sanctuaries of care: spaces where women can resource, reconnect, and lead collective action in times of crisis. Donations to feminist funds like these help to keep these spaces alive and ensure that local leadership can endure this challenging moment in history. <\/p>\n

    Why This Day Matters<\/h3>\n

    Now, for an unfortunate statistic we can\u2019t believe is still true: Less than<\/strong> 2% of global philanthropic dollars<\/strong><\/a> reach organizations dedicated to helping women and girls. Yet, all the evidence points to one truth: investing in women and girls is the smartest way to support communities<\/strong>. Here are just a few examples:<\/p>\n

  • Educating girls reduces child mortality, strengthens family health, and boosts agricultural productivity. (Source<\/em><\/a>)\n
  • Peace agreements involving women are more durable, being 35% more likely to last 15 years and 20% more likely to endure beyond two years. (Source<\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n
  • Closing the gender gap in employment and entrepreneurship could add 20% to global GDP (Source<\/em><\/a>)\n
  • Climate initiatives with women in leadership roles have shown higher levels of community support and longer-term sustainability. Indigenous women, in particular, are leading the effort to conserve ecosystems and protect nature. (Source 1<\/em><\/em><\/a>, Source 2<\/em><\/em><\/a>)<\/li>\n

    When women and girls thrive, everyone does. Investing in them isn\u2019t charity, it\u2019s strategy. It powers solutions that benefit entire societies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    Meet the 2024 Girl Fund Leaders<\/h3>\n

    <\/p>\n

    This year\u2019s Girl Fund cohort<\/strong> demonstrates just how wide-ranging and effective women-led solutions can be:<\/p>\n

  • Confronting climate change in Kenya: MADRE\u2019S<\/a> Indigenous Information Network trains Indigenous women to conserve resources and adapt to drought, making communities more resilient.\n
  • Rebuilding after disaster in Nepal: Tewa<\/a> supports marginalized women and children recovering from earthquakes, providing psychosocial services and long-term recovery tools.\n
  • Equity for women and trans communities in Hong Kong: HER Fund<\/a> uplifts grassroots organizers leading the fight for gender justice in challenging civic spaces.\n
  • Art as resilience in Nigeria: Girl Child Art Foundation<\/a> mentors emerging female artists, equipping them with technical skills and confidence to defy gendered limitations.\n
  • Coding under the Taliban in Afghanistan: Sahar Education<\/a> runs clandestine programs teaching girls tech skills, opening paths to futures once declared off-limits.\n
  • Changing norms by engaging boys in Nigeria: Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network<\/a> works with young men to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, paving the way for equality.\n
  • Promoting menstrual health and community nourishment in Sudan: The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa <\/a>runs women-led community kitchens that offer hot meals to community members, including young women and girls impacted by gender-based violence in the ongoing crisis.\n
  • Keeping girls in school in Tanzania: MSICHANA IMARA Foundation<\/a> empowers girls to sew reusable pads, tackling menstrual stigma while opening the door to education.\n
  • Reproductive rights for migrants in Mexico: Ipas LAC\u2019s Te Acompa\u00f1o chatbot delivers life-saving reproductive health information and support for migrant women navigating unsafe conditions.\n
  • Protecting women and transgender human rights in the U.S.: Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism<\/a> is an activist-led coalition that protects, strengthens, and enables strategic interventions and collaborative research and advocacy efforts.\n

    Together, these projects illustrate what happens when women and girls are not just participants, but drivers of life-giving community change. <\/p>\n

    Powered by Women, We Grow Together<\/h3>\n

    Give to Women and Girls Day is not about charity, protection, or \u201chelping the vulnerable.\u201d It\u2019s about empowerment. When you invest in women and girls, you are investing in climate resilience, peace, health, and stability\u2014the foundations of a better future for all.
    \nAs the saying goes, \u201cwhen women gather, magic happens.\u201d On October 11 \u2014 and all year long \u2014 let\u2019s show the world what that magic looks like when communities are powered by women and girls.<\/p>\n
