We will continue to update this article as new information arises.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>1. 83% of foreign aid contracts were officially terminated on March 10, 2025.<\/h3>\n<p>6,200 USAID contracts were officially cancelled this week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the remaining 1,000 or so contracts would be administered by the State Department, which absorbed the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) last month.<br \/>\n<small><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goats-and-soda\/2025\/03\/10\/g-s1-52964\/rubio-announces-that-83-of-usaid-contracts-will-be-canceled\"><em>Source: NPR<\/em><\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<h3>2. Life-saving emergency programs that were granted waivers in January were ended in February.<\/h3>\n<p>While some emergency programs were granted temporary waivers in late January\u2014such as food aid for Syrian refugees, health clinics combating Ebola in Uganda, and HIV medicine suppliers for the Democratic Republic of Congo\u2014the U.S. government reversed course in late February, ending nearly 10,000 aid programs all at once. This includes food aid to the most vulnerable populations, including refugees.<br \/>\n<small><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/trump-usaid-rubio-marocco-canceled-programs-gaza-syria-congo-hiv-ebola\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Source: Pro Publica<\/em><\/a><\/em><\/small><\/p>\n<h3>3. The death toll could exceed the millions.<\/h3>\n<p>Last week, a top USAID official warned of catastrophic consequences if cuts to global health aid are not reversed. In memos obtained by NPR, Nicholas Enrich, USAID\u2019s acting assistant administrator for global health, detailed projections of how many people could become sick or die if the pause in aid continues. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"box_bottomMargin1 box_verticalPadded1 box_horizontalPadded6 text_fontSizeLarger col_ggPrimary1Text\"><p>Without intervention, 1 million children could go without food and nutrition, malaria cases could rise by 17.9 million, and tuberculosis rates could increase by up to 32%. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, emerging diseases like Ebola could affect 28,000 people, and polio could paralyze 200,000 more over the next decade. The death toll, Enrich warns, could exceed the millions.<br \/>\n<small><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goats-and-soda\/2025\/03\/10\/g-s1-52964\/rubio-announces-that-83-of-usaid-contracts-will-be-canceled\"><em>Source: NPR<\/em><\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<h3>4. Millions of people relied on some form of U.S. humanitarian aid for life-saving medical treatment. <\/h3>\n<p>The abrupt decision to freeze foreign aid has stopped all of the vital work that USAID-supported organizations were doing. Among the hardest hit are several of the largest U.S.-funded HIV\/AIDS programs in South Africa, which were informed their funding would not resume. <\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the International Rescue Committee reported that 31 of its 41 stabilization centers\u2014critical in-patient centers for severely malnourished children\u2014received termination notices. While some have since been rescinded, many centers are now closed, understaffed, or running out of food.<\/p>\n<p>There are also major concerns about tuberculosis, one of the world\u2019s deadliest diseases, with 1.25 million annual deaths. Many food aid shipments have stopped.<\/h5>\n<p>Emergency food aid programs are experiencing huge disruptions. In Ethiopia, nearly 16 million people relied on U.S.-sourced food aid in 2024, but the USAID termination has caused critical delays. The World Food Programme (WFP) was forced to cut rations for refugees as 34,880 metric tonnes of food\u2014enough to feed 2.1 million people for a month\u2014remain stuck in Djibouti&#8217;s port. USAID\u2019s payments system is offline, preventing the purchase of new supplies, deepening the crisis. The United States provided 42% of all humanitarian aid globally in 2024.<\/h3>\n<p>The U.S. government provided roughly $72 billion in aid in 2024 across a wide range of areas, from helping people access clean water, sanitation, healthcare and energy, to providing disaster relief like shelter and food. <\/p>\n<p>Although significant, foreign aid comprises less than 0.2% of the United State\u2019s gross national product (GNP), or the total value of goods and services produced by a country, and around 1% of the federal budget.<br \/>\n<em><small><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/musk-give-update-reform-effort-amid-questions-about-his-power-2025-02-03\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Source: Reuters<\/em><\/a> + <a href=\"https:\/\/diplomacy.state.gov\/online-exhibits\/responding-to-natural-disasters-rescuing-survivors-in-nepal\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Diplomacy.state<\/em><\/a> + <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/02\/06\/what-the-data-says-about-us-foreign-aid\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pew Research<\/em><\/a><\/em><\/small><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>7. Local nonprofits will be hit hardest and quickest by the halt.<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe are still collecting data and stories, but so far, more than half of GlobalGiving\u2019s nonprofit partners whom we\u2019ve heard from are impacted,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/victoriavrana_globalgiving-community-aid-fund-on-globalgiving-activity-7292909408114626564-2ATk?utm_source=share&#038;utm_medium=member_ios\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said Victoria Vrana<\/a>, GlobalGiving CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganizations that have spent years building trust and delivering essential services are suddenly being forced to shut down. And with funding frozen, there\u2019s no time to find alternatives,\u201d said Vrana.<\/p>\n<h4>Here are a few examples of what we\u2019ve been hearing from our partners about the USAID terminations:<\/h4>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>\u201cWe had to shut down a critical mental health program for stateless people overnight.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/donate\/50223\/imkaan-welfare-organisation\/?rf=learn_tips_usaid_termination_fastfacts\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Imkaan Welfare Organisation<\/a> has spent over a decade ensuring that every child under their care has access to healthcare, education, and a safe home\u2014regardless of citizenship status. Their work in Machar Colony, one of Pakistan\u2019s most marginalized communities, has been life-changing. But now, funding cuts have forced them to make devastating decisions. <em>\u201cWe had to shut down a mental health project in a stateless community on an immediate basis. This led to letting go of staff that provided support to the community.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>\u201cThe funding termination threatens essential services for displaced communities.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/donate\/100254\/humanity-and-community-development-foundation\/?rf=learn_usaid_terminations_fastfacts\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Humanity and Community Development Foundation<\/a> works in Nigeria to provide clean water, healthcare, education, and social justice for those who need it, including many displaced communities facing extreme hardship. But now, the funding termination puts these critical services at risk. \u201c<em>It is threatening our ability to continue providing essential services to displaced communities, putting vulnerable populations at greater risk.<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>\u201cProgram activities have been suspended, leaving those living with HIV in grave danger.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nIn Uganda, Nurture Africa\u2019s HIV Healthcare Programme has been a vital source of treatment and care for 3,000 people living with HIV. This program once provided life-saving antiretroviral therapy, medical support, and essential care for some of the most vulnerable individuals. Now, with U.S. foreign aid frozen, these critical services have come to a halt. <em>\u201cProgram activities have been suspended, leaving those living with HIV in grave danger.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<h3>8. Locally-led organizations are doing their best to fill the critical gaps left by the shutdown.<\/h3>\n<p>Local, vetted organizations are always on the frontlines, delivering essential services and support for their communities every day and in moments of crisis and uncertainty. But they need resources to continue their vital work.
