It was a year that required collective action\u2014and reflection. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Just as new vaccines gave us hope, new coronavirus variants took it away, stretching one of the worst pandemics in history into a second deadly year. Globally, a mere <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2021\/09\/1100192\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3%<\/a> of people in low-income countries were vaccinated with at least one dose, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2021\/11\/10\/1052078529\/why-low-income-countries-are-so-short-on-covid-vaccines-hint-its-not-boosters\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">65%<\/a> of people in rich countries.<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>With broken social systems exposed in stark ways, you stood up for a better world, a more equitable world.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Thanks to you, the GlobalGiving community raised $95 million for people in need, even as \u201ccrisis\u201d became a keyword.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The climate crisis caused more powerful storms, pushed a tornado farther across the United States than any other in nearly a century, and prompted a famine in Madagascar. Crisis also described deadly conflicts for migrants at international borders and told the story of many Afghans forced to flee after the Taliban retook control of the country.<\/p> \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>But the heart of the GlobalGiving community spread hope in the most challenging of times.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/5-leaders-speak-out-for-afghansistan-now\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Enayat<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/9\/11-memorial\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gene, Joyce, and David<\/a> kept their commitment to supporting girls\u2019 education in Afghanistan.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/mexico-earthquake-before-and-after\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Isadora<\/a> helped families rebuild foundations that powerful earthquakes in Mexico destroyed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/prosperity-for-single-parents\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kenita<\/a> stopped at nothing to pursue her education and now provides resources other single parents need to learn and thrive.<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/qa\/food-sovereignty-from-theory-to-practice-in-honduras\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donaldo<\/a> advocated for Indigenous communities to grow their own food while guarding their seeds and heritage.<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Along with thousands of others, they made the world a better place in 2021. You fueled their life-changing missions. \r\n<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In service of these changemakers, the GlobalGiving team looked inward. In what ways did we need to serve them better? As we approach our 20th anniversary, we have the impetus to look back. Rigorous introspection has strengthened, not wavered, our founding purpose. To transform the world, we must become ever more community led\u2014beginning with ourselves.<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We know that we need to work from the inside out and always put local leaders front and center. Because change happens in community centers in Brazil and classrooms in Haiti. It happens in gardens in Indonesia and hectares of the Peruvian rainforest. \r\n<br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/community-led-approaches\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how and where community-led change<\/a> happens prompted changes inside GlobalGiving in 2021. We found that our nonprofit onboarding process, the Accelerator, brought thousands of incredible organizations into our community but limited countless others. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/learn\/accelerating-community-led-change\/?rf=learn_viewpoints_2021_impact_report_hero\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">So we decided to find a better way.<\/a><br><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>We\u2019re starting small and with ourselves, but our aim is big and boundless: We want to transform aid and philanthropy to accelerate community-led change.<\/strong> That means when you share, we\u2019ll listen. Show us what you care about, and we\u2019ll champion your cause.
