Because experts disagree about how to end world hunger. Hunger has many causes:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bad weather<\/li><li>Disease outbreaks<\/li><li>Pests<\/li><li>War<\/li><li>Falling prices for crops<\/li><li>Rising prices for food<\/li><li>Low wages or unemployment&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>No single solution can address them all.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>World hunger is a global problem, and progress will be made community by community. Later on, we\u2019ll list some of the best hunger-fighting programs. Please consider donating to at least one.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>What is world hunger?<\/h2>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>World hunger is malnutrition caused by common factors affecting millions of people across regions and continents. These factors include wars, bad weather, lack of transportation options, falling crop prices, and rising food prices.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>Can we end world hunger?<\/h2>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Yes. 193 countries have signed an agreement committing to end all forms of malnutrition by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg2\">United Nations Division for Sustainable Development Goals (#2<\/a>) states &#8220;End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Since adoption of this goal in 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/E\/2019\/68\">the UN reports<\/a> that &#8220;hunger is on the rise for the third consecutive year and little progress is being made in countering overweight and obesity among children under the age of 5.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The UN cites global conflict as a major reason for the lack of progress. According to UN Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, &#8220;A renewed commitment to multilateralism, to prevention and to diplomacy is essential.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>How much of the world is hungry?<\/h2>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>More than 2 billion people do not have regular access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food. Worldwide, 2 billion people do not have regular access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food\u2014including an estimated 29.9 million in the United States.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>How many people in the world die each year due to hunger?<\/h2>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>More than 820 million people in the world suffer from chronic hunger. Every year, about 20.5 million babies are born with low birthweight because their mother didn&#8217;t get proper nutrition. Hunger also causes stunted growth in 149 million children. These factors can lead to death in infancy.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But even if the child lives, they are likely to be underdeveloped physically and mentally, no matter how their nutrition improves as adults.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8220;Starvation only accounts for about 8% of the hungry people in the world,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/sensing-our-planet\/war-on-hunger\">says Pedro Sanchez, co-chair of the United Nations (UN) Millennium Project&#8217;s Hunger Task Force<\/a>. &#8220;The other 92% suffer from hunger silently, and they die in droves because of malnutrition-related diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Additionally, an estimated 4 million people die every year from obesity resulting from bad nutrition.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2>How much would it cost to end hunger in the US?<\/h2>&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justharvest.org\/joel-berg-can-end-hunger-america-1\/\">has calculated the cost of ending hunger in the US at $25 billion<\/a>. Hunger in the United States isn&#8217;t a direct result of war, or crop failures, or massive inflation. Americans who are hungry simply don&#8217;t have enough money to buy food. Berg says &#8220;a combination of increased wages and improved safety net programs&#8221; would be needed.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>On the other hand, the Food Research &amp; Action Center (FRAC) <a href=\"https:\/\/frac.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/plan-to-end-hunger-in-america.pdf\">lists essential strategies to ending hunger in America<\/a>:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Create jobs, raise wages, increase opportunity, and share prosperity.<\/li><li>Improve government income-support programs for struggling families.<\/li><li>Strengthen the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP aka food stamps).<\/li><li>Strengthen Child Nutrition Programs.<\/li><li>Target supports to especially vulnerable populations.<\/li><li>Work with states, localities, and nonprofits to expand and improve participation in federal nutrition programs.<\/li><li>Make sure all families have convenient access to reasonably priced, healthy food.<\/li><li>Build political will.<\/li><\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Some of these long-term strategies can&#8217;t necessarily be accomplished with cash transfers.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>That&#8217;s why (in the short term) donating to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalgiving.org\/search\/?size=25&amp;nextPage=1&amp;sortField=sortorder&amp;selectedCountries=00unista&amp;selectedThemes=hunger&amp;loadAllResults=true\">organizations that fight US hunger<\/a> on a local level is so important.
