One of the most dangerous tropical cyclones on record has claimed more than 400 lives and displaced thousands of people in southern Africa. The president of Mozambique has said the death toll in that country alone could rise to more than 1,000.

Over the past week, the Cyclone Idai’s powerful winds and torrential rainfall have caused flash flooding and deadly mudslides in Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, affecting more than 2.5 million people. And the storm isn’t over, as heavy rain is expected across the region for several more days. It will likely take years for survivors to recover from this disaster.
