“We have been running from fighting for a long time. We settled in the island because it’s much better there. But we can’t leave to go buy food. We eat the weeds floating on the river, sometimes we get fish.”
That's what Nyaluat Chol, a mother of six in Thonyor, South Sudan, told Reuters last week as her family joined thousands leaving the safety of swamps along the river Nile to seek relief from the first aid workers able to visit the village in more than a year.
Three years of civil war in South Sudan has led to 100,000 people facing imminent starvation. The UN estimates an additional 1 million South Sudanese are on the brink of famine, and millions more will be without a reliable food source by summer.
You can make a difference for families threatened by famine. Give today to the South Sudan Famine Relief Fund and you'll support international and locally driven relief efforts, providing lifesaving food, medicine, and other essential supplies.
