It's time to talk about a little something we call the Girl Effect.

Natalia is the kind of girl you want on your soccer team. She’s smart, witty, confident, and a natural leader on the field.

It might be no big deal to see girls playing soccer in your neighborhood, but Natalia and her team, the Mariposas, are a rare sight in Nicaragua. They’re one of the only teams of young girls in the country - so they frequently play against boys’ teams. (And win!)

Most girls in Nicaragua have so many obligations in the house, their dreams get put on hold. They have few career options outside the home, which often leads to early pregnancy, drug use, and early withdrawal from school. Fortunately, Soccer Without Borders, an organization working in Nicaragua, has provided Natalia the opportunity to excel on and off soccer field.

Because she’s been able to play soccer, Natalia is more likely to stay in school; have higher self-esteem; avoid drug use; marry later; have fewer, healthier children; and someday support herself and her family.

Oh. And you can bet that someday Natalia will teach her daughter to rule the soccer field just like she does.

This is a little something we call “The Girl Effect.”

The Girl Effect is what happens when girls are given an opportunity to participate. It's a movement that believes in the unique potential of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world. (Warning: this video might be the best thing that you see all week, so prepare yourself to be fundamentally inspired.)

Last year, donors like you supported Natalia and other Soccer Without Borders teams when they gave to the Girl Effect Fund. It was a huge success. So for the second year in a row, we’ve created an opportunity for girl-focused organizations to win a one-year spot on the Girl Effect fundraising page. But, to make sure the best programs for girls are chosen, we need your help!

More than 50 organizations are competing for Girl Effect funding, but only twelve will win. Vote with your wallet NOW through November 30 for the project you think is doing the best work for girls!

Thanks in advance for helping us find the best programs for girls – and, thank you for the difference your donation will make for girls like Natalia.

Warmly,
Alison Carlman and the GlobalGiving team

p.s. Would you consider forwarding this email to one person you know who believes that girls should be get a chance to play? Or perhaps you’ll share the Girl Effect video on Facebook or Twitter?
