What is the Girl Effect?

The Girl Effect is the unique potential of millions of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world. It’s an untapped force in the fight against poverty and it’s driven by champions just like you. From foundations to forest rangers, teenagers to NGOs – anyone can unleash the Girl Effect and be part of the movement that’s putting girls on the agenda.

What is the Girl Effect GlobalGiving Challenge?

The Girl Effect GlobalGiving Challenge provides a unique opportunity for selected organizations to receive free training on project marketing and online fundraising. Each organization will then put their training to the test and compete to be amongst the twelve girl-focused projects that will be featured on the Girl Effect GlobalGiving fundraising page – and receive a portion of donations made to the Girl Effect Fund – for one full year.

Who Can Participate?

Any organization is eligible to participate in the Girl Effect Challenge if it meets the following criteria::

  • Project must specifically target and benefit marginalized girls, ages 10-19, and must incorporate one or more elements of Girl-Centered Design, as outlined in this handbook;
  • Organizations must submit an Expression of Interest application between July 1, 2012 and August 15, 2012;

  • If project/program meets criteria and is selected for further participation, organization must provide Due Diligence and be vetted by GlobalGiving (only if it has not been vetted by GlobalGiving in the last two years) in order to participate in the Challenge.

  • Projects selected to advance in the application process that have not been vetted by GlobalGiving in the last two years must successfully complete Due Diligence forms and meet GlobalGiving’s requirements around non-profit registration, non-discrimination, internet capabilities, financial record-keeping, quarterly reporting, and the ability to receive funds in US dollars.

If you believe your organization has a girl-focused project that aligns with the mission of the Girl Effect and meets the above criteria, we encourage you to fill out the Expression of Interest form. Applications will be accepted from July 1, 2012 through August 15, 2012. At the close of the application period, a select number of organizations will advance to the Due Diligence round and, if successfully vetted, will have the opportunity to take part in the Girl Effect Challenge to be held November 1, 2012 through November 30, 2012. Organizations vetted by GlobalGiving within the last two years will not have to submit new due diligence paperwork for the Challenge, but they must still complete the Expression of Interest form and submit an eligible project for the Challenge.

Terms

  • The Girl Effect Challenge will begin on November 1, 2012 (00:00 hrs EDT) and continue through November 30, 2012 (23:59 hrs EDT).
  • Eligibility criteria:
    • Project must specifically target and benefit marginalized girls, aged 10-19, and must incorporate one or more elements of Girl-Centered Design, as outlined in this handbook;
    • Organizations must submit their Expression of Interest application between July 1, 2012 and August 15, 2012;
    • Projects selected to advance in the application process that are not currently on GlobalGiving must successfully complete the Due Diligence forms and meet GlobalGiving’s requirements around non-profit registration, non-discrimination, internet capabilities, financial record-keeping, quarterly reporting, and the ability to receive funds in US dollars.
  • During the month-long Challenge, participating organizations will work to generate donations for their projects, with the goal of being featured on the Girl Effect GlobalGiving page and receiving a share of the Girl Effect Fund for one year following the Challenge (December 1, 2012 – November 30, 2013).  In 2011, the Girl Effect Fund raised more than $375,000 via GlobalGiving.org.
  • Twelve winning organizations will be determined based on two categories to include:
    • the six (6) projects with the largest number of unique donors and
    • the six (6) projects selected by the Girl Effect.
  • Projects selected by the Girl Effect expert panel will be chosen based upon how they incorporate innovation into their approach, curriculum, and work, as well as how they effect positive change for marginalized adolescent girls.
  • Only the projects on the Girl Effect Challenge Leaderboard (to be launched November 1st and showcase Challenge donation activity) are eligible for participation in the campaign.
  • Online donations will be accepted from November 1, 2012 (00:00 hrs EDT) through November 30, 2012 (23:59 hrs EDT). Online donations are considered unique if they are made from separate email addresses. The same credit card may be used for multiple online donations. Please note that GlobalGiving will be moderating this in the background and reserves the right to disqualify any attempts of misconduct.
  • All online donations received through the GlobalGiving.org or the Nike WE Portal to Girl Effect Challenge projects will count towards the Girl Effect Challenge leaderboard and unique donor counts. Donations made on www.globalgiving.co.uk or any GlobalGiving corporate sites (including National Geographic Take Action, etc) will not count towards the Girl Effect Challenge unique donor counts.
  • Similar rules apply to unique checks. Only checks in US dollars will be accepted. Unique checks refer to checks issued from unique checking accounts. Checks received from November 1, 2012 (00:00 hrs EDT) through November 26, 2012 (23:59 hrs EDT) will be included in the Challenge and will count towards the number of unique donors for each project. Checks received after November 26th will be applied to the indicated project(s), but they will not count towards the Girl Effect Challenge. Checks should be made payable to the GlobalGiving Foundation and should clearly indicate the project(s) to which the funds should be applied. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept cash donations.
  • Text donations will not apply towards unique donor counts in the Girl Effect Challenge. Projects will receive any funds designated towards them from mobile donations. However, text donations will not count towards the project's unique donor counts in the challenge.
  • Transaction fee for donations: GlobalGiving retains a 15% fulfillment fee on donations but works to keep the fees you pay as low as possible while providing you great services and resources. The 15% fee covers all transactional fees such as credit card charges, as well as helps cover the costs GlobalGiving incurs to promote organizations and projects, provide them with fundraising training and tools, and maintain and improve our online technology in order to keep connecting you with new donors. With our add-on option, we also offer the donor the opportunity to make an additional donation to cover GlobalGiving’s fulfillment fees so that projects receive 100% of the donations intended for them.
  • Please note that GlobalGiving maintains the right to make a final decision on all matters concerning the adjudication of unique donors and final results of the Girl Effect Challenge.

Dates & Deadlines
