What is the Girl Effect?
The Girl Effect is the unique potential of millions of adolescent girls to end poverty for themselves and the world. It’s an untapped force in the fight against poverty and it’s driven by champions just like you. From foundations to forest rangers, teenagers to NGOs – anyone can unleash the Girl Effect and be part of the movement that’s putting girls on the agenda.
What is the Girl Effect GlobalGiving Challenge?
The Girl Effect GlobalGiving Challenge provides a unique opportunity for selected organizations to receive free training on project marketing and online fundraising. Each organization will then put their training to the test and compete to be amongst the twelve girl-focused projects that will be featured on the Girl Effect GlobalGiving fundraising page – and receive a portion of donations made to the Girl Effect Fund – for one full year.
Who Can Participate?
Any organization is eligible to participate in the Girl Effect Challenge if it meets the following criteria::
Organizations must submit an Expression of Interest application between July 1, 2012 and August 15, 2012;
If project/program meets criteria and is selected for further participation, organization must provide Due Diligence and be vetted by GlobalGiving (only if it has not been vetted by GlobalGiving in the last two years) in order to participate in the Challenge.
If you believe your organization has a girl-focused project that aligns with the mission of the Girl Effect and meets the above criteria, we encourage you to fill out the Expression of Interest form. Applications will be accepted from July 1, 2012 through August 15, 2012. At the close of the application period, a select number of organizations will advance to the Due Diligence round and, if successfully vetted, will have the opportunity to take part in the Girl Effect Challenge to be held November 1, 2012 through November 30, 2012. Organizations vetted by GlobalGiving within the last two years will not have to submit new due diligence paperwork for the Challenge, but they must still complete the Expression of Interest form and submit an eligible project for the Challenge.

GlobalGiving is an online marketplace for philanthropy that helps donors support causes they are passionate about. Through its public website, GlobalGiving connects donors to more than 1,500 community-based projects addressing themes ranging from education and the environment to health care and human rights in over 100 countries.

Dates & Deadlines
July 1, 2012 - August 15, 2012: Application Window
Organizations can apply to participate in Challenge by filling out Expression of Interest form. Organizations will be informed of their application status and eligibility on a rolling basis and no later than August 31, 2012.
August 31, 2012 - October 5, 2012: Due Diligence
Up to 50 selected organizations that are not currently on GlobalGiving will be invited to complete the Due Diligence process. Organizations not previously vetted by GlobalGiving must pass GlobalGiving’s Due Diligence process before they can participate in the Girl Effect GlobalGiving Challenge. Learn more about the documentation required during the Due Diligence process. Due diligence results will be sent on or before October 5, 2012.
Please note: Organizations currently on the GlobalGiving platform will not have to pass the Due Diligence process again specifically for the Challenge, unless their materials are due for their regular renewal (every two years) concurrent to the Challenge.
October 2012: Workshop Training and Project Posting
Selected organizations that have current, approved Due Diligence with GlobalGiving have the opportunity to participate in fundraising trainings through GlobalGiving. Trainings may include such topics as articulating compelling projects, tapping into existing and potential donor networks, and using social media to successfully fundraise online.
November 1, 2012 - November 30, 2012: The Challenge
Participating Challenge organizations will fundraise during the month of November in an effort to mobilize the greatest number of unique donors.
December 10, 2012: The Results
Twelve projects will be selected to be featured on the Girl Effect GlobalGiving fundraising page for one full year. The six organizations with the largest number of unique donors will automatically win a featured spot, and six additional organizations will be selected by the Girl Effect expert panel based upon how they incorporate innovation into their approach, curriculum, and work, as well as how they effect positive change for marginalized adolescent girls.
Organizations new to GlobalGiving that are not chosen as one of the twelve winning Girl Effect projects will still have the opportunity to become long-term members of the GlobalGiving community if they are able to raise a minimum of $4,000 from 50 unique donors between November 1, 2012, and November 30, 2012.
December 1, 2012 - November 30, 2013: The Reward
Twelve projects will be featured on the Girl Effect fundraising page on GlobalGiving and receive donations from the Girl Effect Fund for a full year. In 2011, the Girl Effect Fund raised more than $375,000 via GlobalGiving.org.
