GlobalGiving + Meta Crisis Response

Meta's Facebook app offered crisis pages that featured a donate button enabling Facebook users to donate funds to support disaster relief and recovery efforts around the world. GlobalGiving directed these funds to vetted, primarily local nonprofit partner organizations in impacted areas. No fees were retained by either Meta or GlobalGiving on donations made through the crisis donate button on the Facebook app.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does GlobalGiving work with Meta’s Facebook app to power the crisis donate button?
opened toggle arrow
In the aftermath of a disaster, GlobalGiving identifies local, reputable nonprofits that are leading relief and recovery projects in the impacted area and distributes donations from Facebook app’s crisis donate button to verified nonprofits. GlobalGiving is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to accelerate community-led change. Founded in 2002 and based in D.C., London, India, and Shanghai, GlobalGiving helps nonprofits grow and become more effective and has more than 7,500 nonprofit partners in 175+ countries.

How does GlobalGiving choose which nonprofits to support through the crisis donate button?
Priority is given to local organizations responding to a specific disaster event with a proven track record of success in the impacted area, and grants from the crisis donate button are distributed to selected and verified nonprofits on a monthly basis. Learn more GlobalGiving’s community-led approach to disaster recovery.

How can I make a donation through the crisis donate button?
Visit the Facebook app’s Crisis Response Hub to find a summary of disaster events and ways to help, including the option to make a donation to a specific disaster through the crisis donate button.

If I donate through a crisis donate button on the Facebook app, does Meta or GlobalGiving keep a portion of the donated funds?
No. Neither Meta nor GlobalGiving retain any fees on donations made through the crisis donate button.

If GlobalGiving does not retain any fees from the crisis donate button donations, how does it get resources to manage this program?
Meta pays for the cost of administering the crisis donate program.

How fast will my money get to the nonprofit organization?
Generally, disaster relief and recovery funds are distributed to verified GlobalGiving partners within weeks of a disaster event. The timing may vary depending on the scale of a crisis and the amount of funds raised.

In instances where there is no loss of life, injury, or damage resulting from a disaster, why do I still see a Facebook app crisis donate button?
Meta publishes disaster information on its Crisis Response Hub as a public service and enables crisis donate buttons in anticipation of community interest. Once a page for a disaster is launched on the Crisis Response Hub, people may be able to donate before the impact of the disaster is fully assessed. If no loss of life, injury, or damage results from a disaster, GlobalGiving will ensure crisis button donations are sent to verified, nonprofit organizations working with vulnerable and marginalized communities.

How long can I donate to a crisis through the crisis donate button?
Each crisis donate button is featured on a Facebook app crisis page for a period of no more than 30 days.

I made a donation through the crisis donate button but I don’t see a project on GlobalGiving for the crisis response I donated to.
Not every responding organization is listed on the GlobalGiving website. There are two types of instances when a disaster will be featured on both the Crisis Response Hub, and GlobalGiving: (1) a GlobalGiving partner will post a disaster relief and recovery project for a crisis that is also featured on a Facebook app crisis page to help raise additional funds through the GlobalGiving crowdfunding platform, and (2) GlobalGiving has launched a Disaster Fund for a crisis for which there is a Facebook app crisis page.
