Saminah, a mom of two, and nearly 400,000 other people live in and earn a living from Jakarta’s massive landfills. Every day they encounter grave risks, from hazardous waste and disease, to the lack of access to healthcare and schooling for children. But Saminah is committed to giving her kids the chance to determine their own futures.
Through its innovative recycling program, XSProject is introducing new opportunities for Saminah and Jakarta’s trashpicker community—opportunities that are changing lives and creating livelihoods. Here’s how their program works:
XSProject buys non-biodegradable recyclable trash (think plastic bottles and packaging) from trashpickers at above-market rates, paying 30% more than they would otherwise earn.
They then employ community members to wash, clean, and sew the recycled trash into unique, attractive consumer goods like handbags, wallets, and more.
Proceeds from the sale of those goods provide healthcare for trashpickers and their families, and they fund scholarships for children who would otherwise not be able to attend school.
Genius, right? With a donation of $25 or more today, you have the power to help XSProject make a lasting impact with a hand up, not a hand-out for the trashpicker community. You’ll help Saminah and her children unlock their potential to help themselves.
