DAKTARI Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage

The mission of Daktari is to inspire, motivate, and educate underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage.
Sponsor Mr. and Mrs. Strauss, DAKTARI's Ostriches!
Mr. and Mrs. Strauss are two ostriches that DAKTARI rescued from an ostrich meat farm. They were going to be euthanised because they were two small but DAKTARI gave them a second chance at life! By sponsoring our ostrich couple, you will provide them with food for one year and help us maintain and update their enclosure.
Sponsor the Dassies, Tilou, Lulu, and Buddha!
Our three baby Dassies, Tilou, Lulu, and Buddha, are the three remaining Dassies of a group of eight. The others were released in the neighbouring bush area and the last three are still growing up here at DAKTARI before we can release them. They need food and care for the next year at our camp.
Sponsor Maxi, Chancy, Nyalou, and other Antelope!
The antelopes around DAKTARI are all relatively used to people and some of them have been hand raised by our volunteers! Chancy and Nyalou came to DAKTARI in late 2015 and have grown up with us since, whereas Maxi came a few years ago, and has now brought into camp all her offspring since then. We have quite a family! By sponsoring the whole group, you help us provide them with a clean and safe feeding area and all of their food.
Sponsor our Eagles and Owls!
DAKTARI has six predatory birds, three eagles (Jumper, Scotty and Bowie) and three owls (Coco, Alex and Marco). All six are unable to fly properly and cannot survive in the wild on their own. DAKTARI has helped rehabilitate them and now they are cared for at our camp. They all need food and care for the next year.
Sponsor our Meerkats!
DAKTARI has eight meerkats that we care for - Tiki, Colo, Katiya, Gasper, Madonna, and her three kids, Aramis, Athos, and Porthos. Meerkats are not native to South Africa and many of our meerkats are pets that were imported and then abandoned by their owners because they became aggressive. Unfortunately, this means that our meerkats are not able to be released. We need funding to feed and care for all eight of our meerkats for the next year!
Sponsor Minnie and JP, our new Jackals!
DAKTARI welcomed two Jackals to our wildlife orphanage in early 2016. They were given to DAKTARI by the Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre after they were hand-raised from pups. We need to provide them with food and care for a year.
Give DAKTARI a year's supply of toilet paper!
Between the staff, volunteers, and the children that DAKTARI has every week, we use a LOT of toilet paper. To fully stock DAKTARI for one year, we need more than 500 rolls of toilet paper!
Educate African children to save their environment
Through the medium of a wildlife orphanage and our location in the middle of the bush, our mission is to inspire and educate underprivileged South African children to care for their environment, while creating awareness about environmental job opportunities. DAKTARI works with volunteers from all around the world to teach children and provide care for our animals. Provide food&care for ALL our animals for 1 year!
The mission of DAKTARI is to inspire, develop and educate underprivileged children to care for their environment through an immersive experience at a wildlife orphanage. All the animals at DAKTARI can not be reintroduced into the wild either due to injury or because they are too used to humans and could become a danger to local farms. The maintenance of the animals is crucial not only for their wellbeing but also because of the huge support they provide in teaching children about nature. project reportread updates from the field
Make DAKTARI Greener with New Solar Batteries
DAKTARI's camp uses a generator and solar panels to power the houses, kitchen, and office. Although the solar panels are green, the batteries that are needed to store the power for use at night are not. Also, they are constantly needing to be replaced and are very, very expensive. DAKTARI is raising funds to replace our old batteries with newer, lithium ion batteries . The newer technology allows for longer battery life and greener energy use. project reportread updates from the field
