Educating and Empowering Orphan Children

Kalai and Kani are sisters from poor disadvantaged background. Both live with their mother, who works as a coolie worker and supports the family. Their father left the family when both were very small. Kalai and Kani are both studying in government school and Kalai is now in her 10th standard. Kalai's every day routine is cooking, washing clothes, cleaning vessels and cleaning up the house before she goes to school. Her mother leaves very early to work  and so she also has to take up the responsibility of looking after her younger sister too.  Kalai is very determined and very positive about becoming a teacher and also aims at scoring more than 450/500 in her upcoming 10th public exams. She and her younger sister received the educational support from Buds of Christ.

It was a very happy moment for Ramya, child living with her father affected by HIV to go into class 11th in this academic year. Her father had lost hope in her, but the constant coaching at Buds of Christ by the peer volunteers and the staff throughout the year has helped her to pass her 10th standard. She was more happier to receive the educational support and expressed

"I am greatly thrilled i am in new class with new bag, books and uniforms. I also have to thank the team at Buds of Christ for coaching me during the holidays and equipping me to pass in my 10th public exams and I am very happy about it”.

The educational support that included, School bags, two sets of uniform, stationery kits and note books and a water bottle was distributed to 100 orphan deserving children for the academic year 2015-16. Buds of Christ and our girls associated with this project, thank friends at Global Giving to be part of this year's academic support to our girl children.

A time of laughter and learning

It has been an exciting moment for 16 widow mothers on 24th and 25th of May 2016 at Yercaud. For most of the women it has been their first visit outside the district and a time to explore their themselves and to empower themselves to care for their HIV positive children. What started as an introduction led to many women ventilating their fears and concerns of their own and their children's future.

The encouragement was by the positive sharing of Ms. Geetha who herself is a widow living with HIV. Her sharing enabled the women to have a positive thought about the future. Though the trip was a casual plan that emerged from few of the members, it has further encouraged them to sustain the relationship by meeting at least once in two months as a strong support group for mothers.

New ideas have also emerged from the mothers to start a small saving scheme and also a part time business to facilitate an additional income to support the family needs. The women have also planned a yearly retreat of similar kind by generating savings for it through monthly basis.

As the organisation in charge, I was happy on the outcome of the programme and also support the event to encourage well being of the mothers as their well being matters their health and children's health too. I also take the opportunity to thank the well wishers and Global Giving who partnered the initiative - Jeyapaul, Director of Buds of Christ

As a staff and a widow mother living with HIV, I was happy to be part of it ,especially in helping me to encourage them and come together as one family - Geetha Centre Coordinator, Buds of Christ

The Buds Open school offers a supplementary form education to the normal education to help the young children and adolescents gain skils that can help them towards independence. The school drop outs and low performers especially children lviing with HIV are encouarged to study through norn formal methods, in addition to special skills like computer training, arts and crafts and embroidery that are taught on monthly basis.

The meeting was on Aari embroidery work was organised at the centre on and is a fast picking up skill that is in great demand and Ms. Juliet from Chennai was the trainer for the session of 10 participants. The group being a small group helped the trainee practise the stitching under direct supervision of the trainer. The training helped them try 3 to 4 different styles in the stitching that about 6 participants gained it with ease. Each participant has been provided with a frame to be practised at home ,on the skill learnt at the meeting .

This training was organised to engage the young people during the summer holidays and also enhance their skills and provide opportunities for new learning.

For Raje, she is the only child of her widowed mother and has completed her 12th exams and awaiting her results. She was very happy that she has learnt a skill that she can use it as her hobby and later develop as an income source for her .

For sheela, an adolescent girl living with her aged grandfather and dropped from school and attending the Buds open school has reappeared for the 10th exams. She was happy to be part of the training and had expressed "I do not have friends near my house and have always felt lonely and this will keep me occupied and also help me try on my dresses too, I really enjoyed it and happy I came today.”
