Mission

Retrak America is a global leader in providing services to children living on the street. Our vision is a world where no child is forced to live on the street. Our mission is to transform the lives of street children from one of isolation, poverty, abuse and fear into an empowered life within a safe permanent family or independent living. Our dedicated professionals and volunteers provide street children with safe housing, medical care, education, counseling and skill training.

Programs

At the core of our work with street children, is the Retrak model where we enable contact with street children, help facilitate children to be able to form attachments and ensure success continues once the child is no longer in Retrak's care. All of our projects which are featured below follow this successful model. Each Retrak journey begins with our outreach workers meeting children on the streets, who build trusting relationships with each child. When a child then chooses to stay at one of our transition centers they receive access to a holistic set of services including medical care, feeding, sports, accommodation, catch-up education and vocational training. To help facilitate attachments, the child can receive psychological counselling which is aimed at addressing the trauma they have faced due to previous poor relationships and attachments such as with parents. Retrak believes that the best place for a child to develop and grow is with a stable and loving family, and our ultimate goal is to move children through our programs and into a loving home, either with their own family or with a foster family. We work with parents and communities to increase their capacity to care and provide for their children which means children are in a position to form attachments when reintegrated either with family, in foster care or when living independently with community support. At Retrak we ensure success continues once the child leaves our centres through follow-up contact and reviewing the child's situation. By taking this approach it is expected that children will move more quickly from the street and to a sustainable family or community environment. This beginning-to-end approach has helped many children to return home to their immediate or biological families and is hugely successful with 80% of children we've helped staying at home for at least 2 years. Our featured Projects: In UGANDA we work with some of the 6,000 children who are currently living on the streets in Kampala in both our boy's center and our girl's center. At our girl's center, Bulamu, we work with vulnerable girls who have often faced being smuggled into prostitution and domestic work, where they can be exposed to violence and sexual abuse, rape, unwanted pregnancies and HIV/AIDS. We work with these children at our transition centers where they can access important services such as counselling and start the process of being reunited with their family and/ or communities. In ETHIOPIA, Retrak works in the capital Addis Ababa a city in which there are over 11,000 street children. Addis has shown to be a city in which local NGOs and CBOs have severely struggled to support full time street children with less than 10% being currently supported. We work steet children at our transition center where they can access important services such as counselling and medical care and start the process of being reunited with their family and/ or communities. In the DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, Retrak's international project partner the Congo Children Trust (CCT) works in the southern city of Lubumbashi where there are approximately 5,000 children living on the streets. CCT provides children the opportunity to access much needed services at a daytime drop in center and helps trace families to reunite children with their families.
