East Mississippi Animal Rescue

East Mississippi Animal Rescue started in 2001 and is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and re-homing of abandoned animals in East Mississippi. Each animal is given basic medical care and, if at an appropriate age, is spayed or neutered. The adoption fee charged for puppies or kittens includes a spay or neuter fee so the procedure can be done when the animal is old enough. Adoption fees also help cover routine veterinary costs.Rescue expenses are funded by donations and adoption fees

The Return of Zena

Zena after getting a bath
Zena after getting a bath

Today, we'd like to share with you Zena's story. Over three years ago, EMAR took in a pregnant dachshund mix named Zena. While in our care, she gave birth to a litter of puppies, who soon found their forever homes. Zena found her home, too, with a family that included another dog. One night, Zena and her four-legged friend got away from their home. Her family and EMAR volunteers searched for her, put out fliers, and even used Facebook in attempts to bring her home. We even put ads in the local newspaper hoping someone had seen her, but it seemed as if there was no luck.

One day, Paula of EMAR received a text message with a photo of a dog along with the question, "Is this Zena?" With that one message, the journey to bring Zena home began. Paula and Melanie tried several times to catch Zena, but their attempts seemed futile. She had been on her own for so long that she was untrusting of humans. Despite their failed attempts, they never gave up hope.

Recently, a new family moved in close to where Zena had been staying. It was their dog who won over Zena's trust. She even let this new family give her a bath! With the help of these wonderful people, EMAR was able to bring Zena home.

Paula says, "We are so glad to have Zena back home at the rescue." Many supporters voiced their happiness on Facebook and we even heard from some of the families of Zena's puppies!

Zena has made a trip to the veterinarian for a check-up and has unfortunately had to undergo treatment for heartworms. Thanks to donors like you, we were able to provide her with the necessary care and treatments without worrying about where the funding would come from.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and Zena's!

Benson & the Poodles

Benson
Benson

Hello and thanks again from everyone here at East Mississippi Animal Rescue! We are so grateful to have such loyal supporters as you! Today, we want to tell you a little bit about some of the animals your donations have allowed us to help.

Benson, a Doberman, came into our care just recently. He had been run over by a car and had an injury to his foot. (WARNING: Photo is included and may be considered graphic to some.) His owner could no longer afford to care for him, so EMAR took Benson in and saw to it that he received the medical care he needed. Benson had surgery in which two of his toes were removed. He is getting better every day but still has a few more weeks of healing ahead.

These two poodle-mix dogs were abandoned by their owner and taken to the local animal control facility. The staff at the facility asked if EMAR would take them into our care and find suitable homes. They were neglected for quite a while but now their lives are turning around. Both dogs have been fully vetted and are on their way to becoming a part of a very loving family.

We thank you for your continued support and look forward to all that lies ahead. We are committed to helping the abandoned, abused, and neglected animals in our area and we couldn't do it without your help. THANK YOU!

Success Story: BG

BG
BG

Today, we'd like to tell you a success story that your support helped us write! Read on to learn about BG and his story of finding a forever home.

BG came from a hoarding situation in Alabama where he was living with 40 other dogs and cats. The owner of the home had been evicted and the house was being torn down. East Mississippi Animal Rescue took in approximately 20 dogs from this situation and placed them into homes. Due to socialization issues, BG remained in rescue, unable to be adopted. He was scared of almost everyone. It took a lot of work for anyone to gain his trust. In September, a very kind woman named Tammi fell in love with BG. She visited him at the rescue everyday for 2 weeks straight, ultimately earning his trust. They now live happily together. BG is Tammi's heart and he is such a happy guy! He's housetrained, has learned to play with toys, and has become a great little dog! BG has even learned how to smile!
