Summary Prime Trust is trying to help those living in the shadows of society in Pondicherry. Our long term goal to establish a shelter home for the homeless and to provide them services to improve their quality of life. This home will provide empowerment, counselling, de-addiction and vocational training to help these individuals transition from a life of poverty to integrated members of our society. Challenge The challenges for this community are that they raise their children on the streets and their income is picking up rags in the trash bins. The male members are addict to alcohol, unable to raise their wards on par with other members of the society. The children do not get education and follow their parents. Their lack of financial resources, education and home stability result in them living in cycles of poverty and homelessness. Solution Since, the inception of this project in 2017, we are aiming to support 10 homeless women with children at our Homeless Centre. The women will get supports such as counselling, domestic violence protection, de-addiction and rehabilitation support. We will also arrange access to vocational training and micro-credit opportunities to help them achieve financial stability. Children will be provided proper education and access to any of the evening schools of Prime Trust. Long-Term Impact To empower and support these individuals reintegrate into society without having to live on the streets. Updates Prime Trust with its team supports the individuals by providing awareness education on Saturdays provides counseling, support the children with school supplies. The children are motivated to attend evening remedial classes at our center. Updates Miss. Asha Autur, a volunteer from the Netherlands who was the key person to initiate this project visited and interacted with the community few weeks ago. The children were given stationary and women are motivated to attend our tailoring classes. Additional Documentation This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx). Children's Parliament Program
By S.M. Arasu - Founder Director
Prime Trust organizes Children’s Parliament Program to empower children in the slums and for the children in our Remedial Schools and the children of our women from Self Help Groups. These parliaments are designed for children between the age of 9 and 17 and encourage them to engage in local, national and international democratic processes. Essentially these children are discussing issues that directly affecting their lives. Through these parliaments we believe that every child should be able to express themselves openly and without fear.
It is clear that the children in the slums do not have good access to quality education as their parents are unable to provide them. The children living in vulnerable condition are not raised well and they do not know their rights. The children are forced to discontinue their studies and sent for employment to support their families thereby losing their opportunity. The children pick up bad habits at a very young age
Through this program we aim to provide an opportunity to acquire leadership qualities, personality development. The children are taught about their rights and they are getting knowledge on the prevailing political system. It is an initiative to make good future citizens.
The long term impact of this program would be to create a potential society who will be assets of our nation.
Monthly meeting for the children were conducted through our Project Manager. General medical check-up thourgh a medical college was conducted on 10th November 2018 for all the children of our Parliament
To educate and empower the children in slums and rural areas of Puducherry by offering evening remedial classes, counseling services, awareness and community-sensitizing programs.
The factors such as poverty affect children in achieving their goals. The issue of unemployment, alcoholism within the family, single parenthood, neglect and abandonment force the children into poverty and become laborers either during or after the school. The children can’t get any educational support from the parents. The lliterate parents can't assist in doing homework, worsening children's disinterest in education. Additionally, limited educational resources, poor infrastructure leave these children behind.
The Evening school educates through remedial classes and experiential learning. The awareness programs related to physical, psychological and social issues faced by children. The Counseling services during these hours and teach them their rights and how to access them. The evening school will provide children with a structured after school environment; helping them spend time in a productive way towards their education.
The objective and long term impact is to empower and reenergize the children to pursue their dreams. The awareness programs and counseling services will address the children’s' needs holistically. We hope that awareness about oneself and society will help these children to develop a strong personal identity paired with coping and life skills. In addition, we hope that the children take these lessons into their adulthood.
