Saturday Training For Children And Youth At Risk Of Substance Abuse Project

In the past three months, the ministers are unable to hold a full day activity due to the covid situation. However, the children have shown great passion in coming to the Saturday school and none of them have missed a class.We continued providing various weekly activities to develop children’s life in the program are as follows:

 Moral Class included learning the Superbook lesson. The children learned about value and gifts in their life that God can use small children like them to be leaders and be a blessing to other adults or people in their family. Moreover, learned about jealousy and the source of it, at the same time, they learned how God would help them from their anger and jealousy.They also learned about how to be a humble person.  The minister provides handicraft activity or group discussion time to help them have more understanding on the lesson they learned.

Life skill training include learning about Preventing Sexual Harassment through Sexuality Education Program.The minister organizes a collaborative activity with the Department of Non-Formal Education, Pai district. They teach children on how to make a household accounting and an activity on battling Covid -19. Children also enjoy playing outdoor games and sport together. Children can share what they have learn with their parents. The parents have good feedback to all activities given.

Guitar’s mother sent feedback in a message through messenger saying, “Thank you to the minister, I never would have thought that you would teach my children how to use their money and how to make an income-expense record. Before, Guitar has always been thinking of saving up money to buy his dream toy. Then, he talked about breaking his piggy bank with me and grew hesitant about buying his toy because he was scared of using up all of his money. After the activity, it has completely changed his view on spending his pocket money.”

            This is another story of children in the program his nickname is TaTo. He was 10 years old. He told his life story that I live with my sister, my brother-in-law and my nephew. My mother passed away 2 years ago and my father is in jail, in Phitsanulok Province. I have been attending the Saturday School for almost a year now and it has been so much fun for me. On Saturdays, my friends and I would get to learn many topics and we would get to eat snacks and food. My most favorite food is Basil leaves and Chicken with rice. Whenever I am at my village, I would not get to anything apart from helping my sister do all the little chores. Recently, I missed my mother who I was very close with when she was alive. Now that she is not here, it’s lonely and sometimes, in the nighttime, I would often cry because I have a bad feeling and I’m scared of ghosts. This is because I sleep in the open room of my house while my sister and her baby sleep together in a room. However, ever since coming here, the minister has been teaching me how to pray. So, I tried praying with God and felt great afterwards. I could even sleep comfortably and was not scared anymore. Although I miss my mother and father, praying has helped me feel like my parents are not too far away from me. Before I never prayed and would sometimes talk when I’m sleeping. After I started praying before going to bed, I’ve been sleeping better.

Saturday Training For Children And Youth At Risk Of Substance Abuse Project

In the past five months, we continued providing various activities to develop children’s life includes Saturday training programs, home visits, parental training and children’s camp following this;

 Weekly activities included learning the Superbook lesson, Life skill training, and sport activity. We had home visits to distribute relief kits 3 times in each month.  Our program coordinator strictly adheres to the preventive measure of coronavirus pandemic. The target group of children have shown their enthusiasm in coming to the Saturday School. 90% of children attend the activities given regularly and the youth leader group who responsible for holding the activities were more responsible in taking care of the younger children. The minister starts the new activity is the Sexuality Education Program in March. The first topic will be “How to prepare yourselves for becoming a teenager”. The class was separated into boys and girls.

In January, Pai District’s Chief officer had come to give gifts to the children. They appreciated this program in creating a stage for the children to study, practice consistently, obtain knowledge, build good ethics and morality that becomes a good prevention and protection for the children.

            The minister held a parent’s network meeting. We had given the parents information about child abuse and the children’s studies on the topic of Preventing Sexual Abuse to children and preventing from losing children. The children’s grades this semester have improved and they have gotten better at being responsible in their duties. They able to stop bad behaviors and practice to good behavior. The children help to clean the Church and the areas around the center after they learned about love shown in actions before going home.

 After the parent meeting, the parents reflected that they learnt how to protect their children and use the knowledge they received to teach their children at home and use the knowledge to protect their children at home. The minister provides one cartridge of eggs for each family.

        Pin’s grandmother had shared to us after joining the parent meeting that the meeting was very beneficial. “In the past, there was a child who was sexually abused in the community and I am concerned for her two granddaughters. At first, I didn’t know how to teach my grandchildren, but after learning in this meeting, there were methods and guidance in teaching my grandchildren and how to take care of them as well. Thank you for the information and the knowledge from today.

This is a story of children in the program named. Her nickname is Malachi. She is 9 years old and studying in grade 3 at the Ban Pa Yang School. She said “I come to the Saturday school with P’Moses and Aekeu. The three of us are siblings. My father’s name is Paeo , 48 years old and my mother’s name is Naja , 36 years old. I have four siblings and I am the third child. I have one younger brother who is 1 years old. My father is a farmer and my mother works as a janitor. When she is free, she would sew clothes and sell them. When I am at home, I am very happy. After coming back from school, I would help my mother with the house chores such as fetching water and giving food for the pigs, sweeping the house, and washing the dishes. I have been joining this program since grade 1 and I really like coming here. I enjoy with songs and activities given. Moreover, the food here is very delicious and the Superbook lessons are so much fun. The children in this program are come from many different villages such as Ban Maung Soi and Mor Paeng, Ban Mai Sahasampun, and some from the same village as me. The children who have been trained in this program are all very kind and we don’t use swear words or argue with others or hit each other. The minister here teaches us to love and take care of each other. I am quite small, but there are more younger children who are smaller than me. So, I will take care of them just like how my brothers/ sisters here took care of me. I also like learning the Superbook lesson. I would like to thank the Saturday School project for providing a safe place for me on Saturday and I have received a better chance than many children.”
