A double crisis Many places around Lake Victoria in East Africa are currently experiencing a double crisis. While COVID-19 is affecting the health of hundreds of people across Kenya, it is also indirectly affecting hundreds of thousands more people, with more difficulty in accessing fresh healthy food, and income limitations. On top of this, deadly flooding across the regions bordering Lake Victoria have displaced over 100,000 people from their homes. With your support, Kajulu Hills Eco Village Community Based Organization can help people affected by COVID and flooding, and also help to repair their damaged land, communities and livelihoods. Immediate support, long term regeneration While people are in immediate need for support with food, water and tents, we must also consider COVID-19 safety, and supply face masks and disinfectants, so people displaced from their homes are not affected by the disease. At Kajulu Hills Eco Village Community Based Organization, we are noticing that land designed and managed using Permaculture's nature-based principles is less affected by flooding and more resilient to crises. Land planted with indigenous trees and crops, mimicking natural patterns and biodiversity, has healthier soil which has the ability to hold, slow and sink more water. Permaculture farms also produce an abundance of crops that are more nutritious, supporting the health and livelihoods of human and non-human communities. Preparing for the future, the Permaculture way Once people's immediate needs are tended to, we plan to use Permaculture design to heal and restore the land and lost livelihoods. Planting indigenous trees and building water-capturing swales will help to slow and sink water, further protecting from future floods and other climate change related crises, while building the health of humans and the land. Help us to support hundreds of people recover from floods and COVID-19, and ensure a healthy and resilient future.
