Programs

Our current Nicaragua program includes the construction of a new pediatric cardiac unit at La Mascota Children hospital in Managua, a sustainable center for cardiac surgery and education for Central American countries. Surgical and training missions are ongoing at the new Heart Center which opened in late 2013. Surgeons of Hope has outfitted the new Center with the latest in cardiac equipment, including a new catheterization lab valued at $2M, donated and installed by Philips Medical. Volunteer surgical teams are attracted from the world's major children's hospitals to provide surgery and training at the Center. To implement nurses' training for the new Center, the ICU's head nurse is slated to travel to a children's hospital in Spain for intensive instruction in preparation for that hospital's second planned mission to the Center in 2016. We will also be implementing a program for heart disease prevention and public awareness/education in Nicaragua. Also in 2016, Surgeons of Hope has provided short-term mission help to a children's hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica, not only to help that hospital with professional development, but to strengthen the prospect of that hospital's capacity for cooperation with our new Heart Center in Nicaragua. We are promoting a network of pediatric cardiac services in the region. Expansion of our program into Peru is the next location for our full program of operating, training, and building. In 2016, we will send a pilot surgical program to Lima, Peru, to begin surgeries and assess the needs for our program.
